AN ARMFUL OF SOULFUL STORIES

It???s easy to be sceptical of anthologies, not only for their unevenness but also for their tendencies to veer towards that comfortable middle-brow commercialism. This book however, bought impulsively and solely off the recommendation of a friend, was a surprising exception.

???Icarus??? is the stand-out story here. The Avishek Parui tale takes a centuries old Greek tragedy and gives it a refreshingly contemporary makeover. I loved the story for the quality of its prose, its specificity and understated, distant but relentless melancholy. To me the best part in the book is when the protagonist in Icarus is talking to her fianc?? and thinks to herself, ???Of course I knew what Icarus meant and signified. I had been in love with a poet once.??? It is a devastating little line.

???Hope??? also by the same author is an engaging piece of historical short fiction but is ultimately less successful than his ???Icarus???.

???Wake me only when the sun is high??? by bestselling author Sujata Parashar, is a summer-breeze of a read, hiding the insecurities of an ageless woman (or girl) in its garb of languid humour and chirpiness.

???Suicide??? is a dark, off-kilter and very short story about a couple presumably on a beach vacation and the things said and unsaid between them. I found it curiously moving.

???Darkness??? makes good use of tragedy as a framing device and uses it to weave other things around. I liked its ambitious detailing and the minimalism.

???Blackberry Notes??? is all heart. I loved the vivid characterizations and could picture the two brothers in that claustrophobic room. The story about these two brothers and a stranger???s phone has an ending that was too glib for me, although I???m sure it would have its hordes of fans.

???The Last Wish??? and ???Rendezvous??? are two warm, simple and heartfelt tales that thankfully are bereft of any urbane, nerdy, tacky, shallowness that pervades so many stories today.

The collection also boasts of several other good stories. Priced at Rs. 120/- on flipkart at the moment, it is great value for money because the calculation comes to roughly less than Rs. 6 per story- a price that???s a bit more an egg and a little less than a lemon, or vice-versa, depending on where in India you stay. Recommended.

Nice book...must read

Very nice concept by National Story Contest. Gives the readers access to fresh concept and ideas. Some of the authors are really good and will look forward to reading books/stories by them. My pick Blackberry notes and Dinner Conversations.
