The UPSC conducts exams for selecting candidates for recruitment into the Indian Engineering Services (IES). The IES exams are conducted for a number of engineering disciplines like mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electronics and telecommunications engineering etc.
The IES exam consists of three papers. The first is the General Studies paper that is common to all streams of study. This paper tests the candidate’s general aptitude and English language knowledge. The other two papers are specific to the subject chosen.
Each engineering stream subject is divided into two sections, providing the syllabus for the two technical papers. For each section, the candidate has to take separate objective type and conventional type exams.
After the General Studies exam, the candidates have to sit for the two objective type papers for the two sections of the syllabus. The next day, they have to take the two conventional style papers for the two sections.
