Book: Imagining India: Ideas For The New Century Since the early 1990s, India has witnessed great social, political and cultural change. As the world’s largest democracy, its most diverse nation and one of its fastest growing economies, India is now, sixty years after Independence, universally regarded as an emerging superpower. In this sweeping and comprehensive book, one of the country’s finest and most dynamic minds examines the central ideas that have shaped modern India, and offers an original perspective on our past, present and future.
Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, who has been a key player in India’s growth story, points out that the country’s future rests on more than simply economic growth; it also depends on reform and innovation in all sectors of public life. Looking closely at India’s recent history, he examines the ideas and attitudes that evolved with the times and contributed to the country’s progress, as well as those that kept it shackled to old, unproductive and fundamentally undemocratic ways. He discusses how India’s early socialist policies, despite good intentions and astonishing idealism, stifled growth and weakened democracy; how, contrary to received wisdom, the country’s large and overwhelmingly young population has now become its greatest strength; how information technology is revolutionizing not just business but also governance in the everyday life of a vast majority of Indians; and how rapid urbanization is transforming both society and politics.
Nilekani also gets to the heart of charged debates about caste politics, labour reform, infrastructure, higher education, the English language in India and the role of the state in a globalized world where the wealth of big corporations exceeds that of some nations. And as he does this, he asks the key questions of the future: how will India as a global power avoid the mistakes of earlier development models? Will further access to the open market continue to stimulate such extraordinary growth? And how will this growth affect—and be shaped by—the country’s young people?
India is in the middle of a huge transformational process, Nilekani argues, and only a safety net of ideas—from genuinely inclusive democracy to social security, from public health to sustainable energy—can transcend political agendas and safeguard the country’s future.
Book Reviews of Imagining India: Ideas For The New Century
Imagining India Review by Suresh RamakrishnanWhat can I say? I bought this book based on my perceptions that Nandan Nilekani - with his background at Infosys - would have written something real good. Instead I ended up reading stuff that a kid would know is not true at all. This is a book that is meant to provide further publicity to Nilekani and Infosys and offers no real thoughts or ideas on India.
Sure, buy this book at your peril.
Suresh Ramakrishnan is a Fortune Teller! Review by SanjayMr.Suresh Ramakrishnan has already given a comment on how this book is - while the release date is 25th November - that is TOMORROW.
Sure - he must be either a boy out of printing house - to have stolen a 'copy' or a good fortune teller!
Sir - join Bollywood, you could create a great career for yourself!
Better Cover Review by wish to be unknownWell I have not read the book, but I would definitely have had a better cover. I don't think this book is meant to be an autobiography and having a large picture of the author on the cover is in my mind a publicity stunt.

Nandan is a wise business man Review by Jatin TehriI read somewhere "people read more in recession".
when economy especially IT Sector is seeing a negative growth, Nandan has come up with a good idea of writing a book.
Really, he is a very good businessman...
Nandan's tribute to India Review by VinI see where Nandan is coming from. He being a very successful businessman and a witty guy thought of helping this country by implanting his thoughts in people's mind.
Good effort, but seems more of a time waste on Nandan's part. If he focuses on his business - Infosys may sure do well in recessionary times, else we might see more books from his fellow Infy co-founders.
... Review by SaratMr.Nilekani certainly needs neither the money or the publicity from this book.Had he devoted the time and energy in writing this book elsewhere he would have got a lot more publicity and certainly more money!I'm sure he wants this book to spread his ideas to more people or perhaps even encourage people to come up with their own ones.I've not read the book yet, therefore I cannot say.Having said that,if he's not doing this for the money then he should have written it for free and reduce the cost of the book :P
Matter for CBSE Class V Syllabus Review by AnonymousEverybody expects things to be extremely precise and focussed when it comes from a person like Mr. Nilakeni's eminence. The contents are too vague and lacks depth. By captioning the book as " Imagining India" the author bails out on being too general and subjective. An edited version of this book could be recommended for CBSE Class V Syllabus !
Commonman's Reading Material Review by NedumpuramHats-off to Mr. Nandan for bringing out such a reading material which is too general and easily graspable by a common man. In total contradiction to one's perception, Mr.Nandan- occupuying the top most chair of Modern Corporate Biz , has never made the contents intricate and complex. This book is defenitely for the masses and is sure to boost Mr.Nandan's popularity and liking !
A mandate buy for all Infosys employees ? Review by ThampichanWonder whether all Infosys Employees would be voluntarily or involuntarily compelled to buy this book ? In that case this book has every chance to be India's best Seller of recent times. Having said so, its a great book worth reading and Congrats to Nandan Nilakeni for spending his precious time for contributing his ideas towards the growth of our Nation !
A book for all Review by S K AnandI see this book written more by an entrepreneur than by someone who put India on IT global map. Nilakeni inspires everyone, especially the ones who are out of IT fraternity & inspires each one of us to change our perception & attitude of making it big in this so called "diverse" country. I would recommend this book to be read by everyone, especially those who earlier must have appreciated same vision by APJ Abdul Kalam.
A vision to common men Review by AnonymousA co-founder of infosys, been through a hale number of tight corners & achieved this hight. If such a person writes even a paragraph, its really worth to read. The growth he has been giving to Infy is highly appriciable.
i have not read this book, however i would suggest a visionert men to read to give better shape to our nation - INDIA
Imagining India: Ideas For The New Century: Review by M.L.MURTYComing from Nilekani the book does raise expectations. However the basic premise of dabbling in ideas makes the book an exercise in examining the possibilities. To that extant the author comes out as clear minded with a grasp of the socio evonomic issues concerning contemporary india. The language and presentation are straight and donot indulge in the gimmecry of impressing the readers with jargon or high sounding phrases.
May be the book could be edited to be more cfocussed and reach out to the younger generation.
The hard bound copy with price at around Rs 700 is definitely a dampener for the target reader group.A qucik translation and reaching out to the youngersters in the hinterland may be the thing.
Donot certainly agree with those who ascribe motives of money, publicity to Nandan.. the urge to reachout to new ,younger consttuants is transparant....
Good effort.
REcommand for must read for the 18-25 year old.
money matters Review by anonymousSurely,Mr Nilekani has tried his best to harvest such fantastic book which targets the vibrant youth of India, but it would have been better had he got a more realistic approach towards the cost.
IDEAS COMES FIRST, VALUE LATER Review by DR. N. A, CHARANTIMATHMr. Nandan Nilekeni deserves a much appreciation for taking time to write a book. IDEAS must transform the Society, the book is a good product of discharging a social responsibility by those who possess abundace of knowledge at global level and Mr Nilekeni is best example to do that...

learning for others..... Review by deepak kharbandaFirst of all, i would like to give my warm regards to Nilekeni Sir for writing such a precious book on the nation. Very few great people do such kind of things for the nation as he does. Being a student of MBA I would say that this is a good investment of time in the economical slowdown. Others should learn a lesson to him and should come forward & do something for the nation..........
Jayant Sinha review's "Imagining India" by Nandan Nilekani Review by Jayant SinhaIndia, the democratic juggernaut, with myriad cultures, communities and conflicting interests is a conundrum not easy to unravel. Yet, India has plodded the treacherous path rather remarkably, offering new insights and keys to survival. Nandan Nilekani’s “Imagining India” traces the history of India and the impact of its emergence as a key determinant of South Asia’s, if not the world’s, geo-political and socio-economic environment.
Nandan Nilekani talks not just about India’s nagging problems, but also about its latent strengths in all walks of life, which remains to be fully explored and exploited. India has celebrated the rise of entrepreneurs, with grit and determination, who have thrived despite odds, overcoming numerous challenges in the form of bureaucratic hurdles, political turmoil and natural calamities. Nandan Nilekani’s “Imagining India” can be seen as a tribute to India – a nation full of promise amidst strife and chaos, often defying logic, and yet gradually emerging from its shadows, striving to unlock its potential to become a leading light.
Nandan Nilekani’s reflects on the legacy of India’s bonded past, which nevertheless has also given the nation a rich amalgamation of cultural traditions, arts and heritage.
This has also contributed uniquely in the transformation of ancient India, though not entirely without fits and starts, into a modern, developing economy.
The 1980s saw the telecom revolution taking the nation by storm. The 1990s saw IT in its new avatar with TCS, Wipro and Infosys propelling the nation in the global arena. The 21st century saw Delhi Metro emerging as the best run mass transit system, setting the bar for professional excellence in project execution. “Imagining India” talks about the rhetoric shifting from bare necessities to infrastructure creation.
If you love India, go ahead and read the book. You will start loving it even more!

Infosys is the greates slave trader of 21st century Review by SpencerWith due respect to the leaders Nandan Nilekani and Infosys I must say INfosys/TCS is the biggest slave trader of 21st century , they send lot of young boys with dreams in their eyes to US and I have heard the families like it a lot but here the youngsters face the harshness of a foreign land . I have talked to some of the boys and even though they dont say it I know this company Brain Washes these youngsters to customer satisfaction etc and their managers keep pushing them to the limit till these guys loose all motivation and craze of life . Theese guys are paid good but their lives suck big time .
I dont think a person like Nandan who cant understand a bit about its employees , can do anything for India. These good boys should be valued by their company .
for popularity no problem Review by rahul jawalekari am writing this on behalf of reviews i am reading if this is a publicity stunt or for money making but it is good that mass audience can understand this neways sometimes we should think of the people who can not understand hi fi language and thoughts
