  • Description
Indians wryly admit that “India grows at night.” But that is only half the saying; the full expression is: “India grows at night…when the government sleeps,” suggesting that the nation may be rising despite the state. India's is a tale of private success and public failure. Prosperity is, indeed, spreading across the country even as governance failure pervades public life. But how could a nation become one of the world's fastest-growing economies when it is governed by a weak, ineffective state? And wouldn't it be wonderful if India also grew during the day—in other words, if public policy supported private enterprise? What India needs, Gurcharan Das says, is a strong liberal state. Such a state would have the authority to take quick, decisive action; it would have the rule of law to ensure those actions are legitimate; and finally, it would be accountable to the people. But achieving this will not be easy, says Das, because India has historically had a weak state and a strong society.

    Extremely Delightful

Das has shown his mastery over the subject as well his renowned ability to lucidly put his point across. A book without any claim to fame yet nonetheless quite worthy of it.

    India Unbound is still better

This book is the logical successor of India Unbound. The writing style has changed a lot to include numerous references for every statement. Also, the narration is focused on essay style, rather than the flowy, story-telling style of India Unbound.
Still, the book is quite informational and brings you up to speed on the zeitgeist of India.

Cant read this at Night !

Mr Das has done quite a research but the findings are all over the place! Except that we need a strong state that implements law and order, which in turn would build confidence in the minds of the investor - nothing much may come out of this book. I wouldn’t want to be a critique and all that since Mr Das has some wonderful and thoughtful books written preceding this one .. but .. Beware do not read this at night, you may fall off your bed :) Asleep !!

    Good Read..but very slow..

Must confess that Mr. Grurcharn Das is one of the finest writers on Indian Economy & Curret affairs.

However this book deals with the issues which we have currently faces in last few years & the journalist community has written loads of pages on these issues..because of this the air is taken out of this book, since there is nothing new in the book, but just one more opinion.

This book could have been more enlightening had he followed the book writing model of Sir Mark Tully; this book shoul...

    A tough read

I'm a fan of Gurcharan Das. I've read India Unbound and The Elephant Paradigm. Both of which I whole heartedly recommend.
However this book is a tough read. It reads like a textbook. I found myself skipping whole pages in order not to fall asleep. Even if I fully endorse everything he says (strong state to implement law and order is necessary to grow) I wish the book was more full of stories of India and examples of successes and failures. This was the beauty of the other 2 books I mentioned....
