India Since Independence (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.279

An insightful narration on how the world’s largest democracy, India, was forged, India Since Independence is the sequel to India's Struggle for Independence and was first published in 2008.

Summary Of The Book

India Since Independence gives a succinct analysis of the various obstacles and challenges India had to face and overcome in her past, and her proudest and most successful moments in the century until independence.

The book narrates how the Constitution was drafted, and the development of economic and political agenda heavily influenced by Nehru. It also provides an insight into the fundamentals of foreign policies and an in-depth analysis of the different reforms in the Indian economy since 1991. The author scrutinizes various aspects like the problems in Punjab, the predominant practices of untouchability, and party politics in the Centre and states.

In addition to providing information on the decline of the National Democratic Alliance in 2004, and the resultant rise of United Progressive Alliance's power, it also discusses the deal that unravelled political consensuses, the Indo-US Nuclear Deal.

The book includes chapters like The Initial Years, The Colonial Legacy, Foreign Policy: The Nehru Era, The Rajiv Years, Agriculture Growth and the Green Revolution. The book has 41 chapters in total.

This edition provides an updated and revised overview of the Indian economy, and with a consolidation of objective assessments by public figures like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh, this new edition includes an overview of the Indian economy in the new millennium.

informative but biased

The book certainly is not critical of the leftist forces and leaves the readers ignorant of the rightist wing that too had an undeniable impact in the making of modern India. There are few authors in India like Guha who are equally critical to the both Congress and BJP . The contributions of Golwalkar and Shyama Prasad Mookherjee in providing an alternative for the Congess has been neglected. None the less the book is a journey and account of the struggle and accomplishments of India since its making.

crap!

its a shit book which has a biased left to centre view of everything.
it has not understood the rss, the communist party, the jp movement or lal bahadhur shastri.
india after gandhi by ram chandra guha is far better factually, philosophically and ideologically

Informative for the Ignorant but left-inclined.

I liked this book very much as it is very informative for people like me who hasn't got an in-depth idea of India's modern history but would like to have one. Though this book is a good read to gain knowledge, I found that the writers are biased towards left-leaning centrism. They do not have a single good word for the rightist forces who also had a major contribution towards India's development. As a historian, one ought to have unbiased opinions. And also, I felt no matter how bad a Congress leader might have been, which they even mentioned, in the end they projected them to be the real h... ()

Read it if you may but make sure you do not form any opinions of rightists reading this single book.

very basied and very poor book; dont waste your money:

this is what money can buy fame; for if you ask a writer to project you and your family and your party in this case congress and Nehru family. the write has done what we call intellectual prosti****n. who ever pay: get what he/she want. some day I will ask bipin candra to write about me or will I if have have consciousness?

There is no objectivity and balanced view no critical analysis. Its congress calisha like hanuman calisha more you read it more hanuman become stronger.

dont buy it for exam.
instead buy ramchandra guha india after gandhi or any other book

SUCCINCT IN TOTAL BUT LACKS IN ESSENTIAL

Good book to read who had great knowledge, for others one should be careful in reading it is a culmination of opinions not facts, Read it like an editorial in news paper. In my opinion History become more analytical now It is no more same as our Old scholars( authors) thinks, authors missed lot of points in this book and included which was irrelevant now. For more clarity opinions are fact based analysis and thoughts of a person, here person always environment ( Place(India,State,Didtrict..etc),Religion,Caste,economic classes, age groups etc) and Heredity(origin of his body physiology and ps... In my opinion History become more analytical now It is no more same as our Old scholars( authors) thinks, authors missed lot of points in this book and included which was irrelevant now. For more clarity opinions are fact based analysis and thoughts of a person, here person always environment ( Place(India,State,Didtrict..etc),Religion,Caste,economic classes, age groups etc) and Heredity(origin of his body physiology and psychology ), All the authors were old they are great in knowledge but they failed in the preparation of this book, I strongly against about all 4 chapters which are about consolidation of different aspects they are missing several themes and areas, they left several gray areas untouched like mass media and social media and its impact etc, I think some new chapters should be incorporate in its next edition , these are Right to information act and its impact, more analysis about coalition politics, Globalization and its impact. Changing life style (job(agriculture to Industry to services, unorganized to organized), cultural, International relations (Briefly about our foreign policy changing trends) ) and several crucial aspects with little fore casting about future will makes this book great. I hope authors will note this in view. this is the classic example for generation gap and ideology,( in my view history always had some dynamic connection with present so please don't neglect present context and situations and problems, in my point it must show some solution not just a fact analysis ) finally I recommend all civils aspirants read this book once before your mains exam and flip-kart is the best place to buy and best price it offers. Flipkart simply awesome , this book is good but not excellent. for me ordinary book.

At the first shot the authors may seem to be biased towards Congress in general and Nehru in particular due to their research on Nehru and his ideologies but they don't miss the opportunity to blend the reality with truth which can be appreciated without reaching our wit's end. The book gives bir... (View complete review)

A Good Educational Read for Everyone

A good book to read if one is interested in knowing what happened in India after Independence since most of the books on market deal with history of India before Independence and end. (View complete review)
