India is blessed with exuberant natural resources and industrious, intelligent people but has lagged behind in development. A third of Indians remain illiterate and many more ignorant. People die of starvation through a three year supply of food grains remains in storage. For two generations after independence India was kept isolated from the world by a pernicious regime of controls and high duties. The book analyses the impediments and ofers suggestions for removing them.

Dr Satya Prakash Garg obtained C.E(Hons) Diploma with a gold medal from the Thomason College, Roorkee, India. He was awarded the Ph D degree by the State University of IOWA, USA. He worked in the U.P Irrigation Department for 35years and held positions, interalia, of chief Engineer and Director Of Irrigation Research Institute, Roorkee. The President of India awarded him the Railway Board`s gold medal for his research on training of rivers.
