INDIRA : THE LIFE OF INDIRA NEHRU GANDHI (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.398

The definitive and first non-partisan biography of one of the most formidable political figures of the twentieth century (voted Woman of the Millennium in a BBC poll, 2000). Indira Gandhi’s life, from her birth in 1917, through partition and up to her assassination in 1984, was dominated by the politics of her country. Always directly involved in India’s turbulent twentieth-century history, once she accepted the mantle of power, she became one of the world’s most powerful and significant women. This biography, the first to be written by an unpartisan, Western woman, will focus on Gandhi’s role as a female leader of men in one of the most chauvinistic, complex and politicised cultures in the world. Comprehensive, yet also personal, Frank’s biography will deal with power and how this often isolated woman handled it, alongside her family and her emotional life. It will be the definitive book on one of this century’s most powerful and important women.

Katherine Frank has given a vivid and detailed account of the life of our late Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. This well organised book is aptly divided in three parts describing the Katherine Frank has given a vivid and detailed account of the life of our late Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. This well organised book is aptly divided in three parts describing the three phases of Mrs. Gandhi???s life viz. Indira Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister Gandhi. It does not start with her birth, but much before that. It traces her ancestry, briefly describes her home and the life of its residents, the major political events and the social background. It ends with her assassination and its impact felt by the country and the world. This book would appeal not only to the readers who are inquisitive to know about Indira Gandhi???s life but also for those who are interested in knowing the political events preceding and following the independence of India.
This book looks convincing as it is a well researched piece of work undertaken by Frank for six years. The first two parts of the book seem to be more authentic and credible since the source of information is the correspondence of Mrs. Gandhi, mostly with her father and her close friends. However, for the last part, the information is obtained from the interviews of the people associated with Mrs. Gandhi. Hence, at times this part of the book becomes feeble as the account appears to be coloured by the opinion of specific people. Nonetheless, on the whole, the events and the causes provided are well explained and look plausible.
Frank not only chronicles the events but also makes an attempt to go into the psychological state in which the protagonist of her book must have been during the occurrence of such events. This is what makes the account more lively and her character more genuine. The otherwise formidable looking Indira Gandhi becomes so ordinary and real. We get to see the glimpse of a woman who is a caring and a dutiful daughter (for both of her parents), a yearning wife, a protective and indulgent mother, an affectionate grandmother and above all, the matriarch of her family. We understand her and even empathize with her. Simultaneously, the other image of her personality- awe inspiring, tough and a strong person, and an astute politician- has also been elucidated by Frank with ease. These two sides of her personality are so contradictory that one wonders how such transitions must have taken place. Frank takes us through her journey of life so effortlessly that these jerks are not felt.
The book is as interesting and eventful as the life of Mrs. Gandhi. Bitterness with her aunt Vijay Laxmi Pandit, her disturbed childhood, romance with Feroze Gandhi and then her marriage falling apart, heart-breaking deaths of her loved ones, her clash with her daughter-in-law, her rise to power with her stature being elevated to that of Goddess Durga, and then her fall to disgrace and still her resilience to emerge again as a strong leader, the use and abuse of power- it has all the elements that a drama can offer.
Though there are many books published on the life of this remarkable woman, this one is well-rounded, compact, detailed and engaging. It is also packaged attractively with young and smart Indira Gandhi bearing an enigmatic smile on its cover page. Considering the exhaustive and comprehensive work done, it has been rightly priced. It is worth a read.

INDIRA the GREAT INDIAN

I read this book first some 10 years back. Indira's life was a journey replete with trials and tribulations of all kinds. At times, a reader would have tears in the eyes touched by the sufferings of a woman who was alone most of her life.

I bought this book now again to gift the copy to a friend of mine.

Indira was a true nationalist and she faced everything with exceptional courage and fortitude. The boo manages to bring out these vividly through an emotion-packed narration.

Wonderful Book..!

This book unfolds inspiring non partisan biography of our late PM Indira Gandhi who led this nation very efficiently with so many hurdles in her way. She was undoubtedly responsible for shaping India's destiny and bring us a national self-esteem. It would be shocking to know that her life was fully with challenges though she was brought up in a influential family. Also, it unfolds how she suffered from bad health for more than three decades. In addition to that, Katherine Frank has tried to disclose her personal life disasters which she came across in her life..

5/10 Rating book

Descriptive writing. The story gets lengthy and boring in between. Some of the chapters are interesting to read but overall it was monotonous. (View complete review)
