Surprisingly skillful for a first novel.
I found this book in the mystery and detective section of flipkart. Being a Freud aficionado, I knew I had to buy it. I assumed that is would be a Sherlock Holmes type novel, with Freud leading the way, employing his psychological skills to aid in deduction. But I was wrong, the story actually revolves around Dr. Younger(who at times is the narrator) and he receives Freud,(along with others)a guest in America. The book actually has two mysteries entangled together. First is the murder part and second is the threat Freud receives. As the story proceeds it takes a more hard-boiled format at times(which I think skilfully emphasizes NY's aura at the period). Rubenfeld also goes into the depth of the infamous relationship between Freud and Jung showing his hold over history. The twists are stupendous for an author writing his first novel! I thoroughly enjoyed this book (some facts that are true makes it more intriguing) and can't wait to purchase 'The Death Instinct'. I would recommend this book to all those seeing a thrilling ride as this book as the beautiful blend of European thriller mystery along with the frankness of American hard-boiled authority. As strange as it would seem, I would recommend this to all Shakespeare fans as well, trust me at the end of the book
you will get a new interpretation of Shakespeare's 'To be or not to be'
