  • Description

The Interpreter of Maladies is a collection of short stories by Jhumpa Lahiri.

    Summary of the book

Incorporating universal themes and showcasing the feeling of being lost experienced by Indians when they move abroad, leaving their motherland, these stories delve into the psyche of Indians and discuss how older generations cope with their need for their roots. It also shows how the younger generations are rediscovering the old, and how they return to their roots to discover their identity and traditions. Unaccustomed Earth, both the title of the book and a short story in the collection, refers to the world that has not yet grown used to the tremors that flow underneath it. Ms. Lahiri speaks of a world constantly under barrage by natural and man-wrought tremors, an Earth, she says, that our ancestors would never recognize. These stories deal with Indian-Americans questioning their privileged lives. Ms. Lahiri's writing flows with her emotions and continues to carry her readers alongside. The characters are down-to-earth and utterly human in their desires. The titular story follows Ruma, a young Indian housewife who moves to Seattle and puts her own career on hold for the demands of a familial life. Her recently widowed father joins her family and although Ruma thinks she will have to baby sit him, Ms. Lahiri shows that she is mistaken.

    Any immigrant's dream

Any immigrant, who loves to read, should pick up this book. A lovely set of stories, on lvies of people who may reside overseas, or visit their homeland.

Especially heart warming is the last story in the set, about a newly married couple and their initial days in a new city in USA. The story plots the initial incidents of the hero, with his old landlord, and how he remembers her later, once he finds himself settled in Boston.

The title story also, has its twists, like many of Jhumpa's other...

    Really Nice

The book is in good condition. I'm too exhilarated to receive this book as this is the second book I'm gonna read by the Pulitzer prize winner author 'Jhumpa Lahiri'. It's really charming when one gets into her book and find oneself to be absorbed in that so much that one forgets one surrounding. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to LOVE this book too by her...❤

    Best in the market!

Thanks Flipkart for this excellent book at a great price. And Jhumpa Lahiri's writings are just marvellous as was The Namesake. Each story is wrapped with the warmth of Bengali culture and Tradition. The stories are fragnated with the essence of age old tradition that still prevails in the streets of Kolkata.

    Amazingly Good

This a very good collection of short stories. There is nothing fancy about any of them. But it is wonderfully written and once you start reading it is difficult to put down. Somehow it was easy on eyes and you could easily sympathize with characters.(eg: a real durwan)

    A garland of emotions

Certainly winner of Pulitzer Prize for her work, Lahiri has needled a number of emotions in a single garland of "Interpreter of Maladies". Each story is unique and original as a personal experience of writer or a thought of creativity. A good work to read to understand Lahiri's work of fiction.

    Engrossing and well written.

Well with a Pulitzer Prize under its belt Lahiris tales are wonderfully written and engrossing. Most of the stories deal with Boston Bengalis but even the two tales written about native Indians are well written. All the stories are clear and concise and grapple with emotions which form the basis of everyday life. Loss, fear, suspicion, love, lust, detachment, patriotism and many such emotions are wonderfully delineated by the author so much so you can envisage the characters and the plot when ...

    Nice

Bought this as the 2nd book of jhumpa lahiri after reading the lowland. Lowland is a nice book to read and so are these short stories but sometimes i had to stretch as some stories were getting boring. Overall good, nicely written and worth reading.

    Fabulous!

It is difficult to review this book, when I am little bit biased to author. I personally respect Jhumpa Lahiri for her extraordinary power of telling story and appropriate description of all corners.

Interpreter of Maladies is a book of short stories. My favourites are A Temporary Matter, Sexy, Mrs. Sen's, Treatment of Bibi Halder & The Third & Final Continent.

There are lots of moments which have shaken me. I, specially mention that moment, in "Sexy" story, where little Rohin explains the ...
