Into the Wild (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.220

Into the wild is a book that is an exploration of the reasons behind the death of a young man, Chris McCandless. He abandons his possessions in order to experience solitude and explore the wild in his own way.

Summary of the Book

Chris, an intelligent young man who graduated with high grades, came from a wealthy and loving family. He was intelligent and graduated with double grades. However, this did not stop him from leaving everything behind and trekking into the wilderness where he could find a way to be close to nature. He was in search of something more deep and elusive in life. He had a yearning to explore and live a simple life. It was in the year of 1992 that he decided to give away his savings and start life anew and experience life in its simplest form. His family searched for him, but he had erased all tracks. Four months later they found his body in an abandoned bus. It was found by a moose hunter in a remote corner of the Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska. Jon Krakauer, the author of this book, wrote an article about Chris in the year 1993 for the Outside magazine. The reactions to the young man’s story were different. Some said that he was foolish and got what he deserved while others were in awe of his courage to go out and find meaning to his life.

DEATH IN WILDERNESS

The protagonist Chris McCandless would never have imagined in his wildest dreams that his death in Alaskan Wilderness would make him a worldwide phenomenon thanks largely to the book ???Into the Wild??? by Jon Krakauer and Sean Penn???s movie by the same name.

At age 22 Chris McCandless left his home, abandoned his car mid-way, worked at odd jobs to earn money, hitch hiked to various places in America and finally went to Alaskan Wilderness to have a sojourn of solitude by living off the land. He intended to return to civilization but finally succumbed to starvation or perhaps accidental po...

At age 22 Chris McCandless left his home, abandoned his car mid-way, worked at odd jobs to earn money, hitch hiked to various places in America and finally went to Alaskan Wilderness to have a sojourn of solitude by living off the land. He intended to return to civilization but finally succumbed to starvation or perhaps accidental poisoning.

The author portrays a haunting storyline right from Chris???s childhood days, the relationship with his parents which steadily detoriated, the lives of many people he touched on his way and the affection they all hold in their hearts for Chris McCandless.

Perhaps he was an eccentric, perhaps he was reckless in his pursuits, perhaps he was an idealist (holding writings of Jack London and Thoreau in high esteem), perhaps he was ill prepared to move to Alaskan Wilderness by not carrying enough food rations, maps or compass, perhaps he was just unlucky to have got stuck up over there. People may call him a martyr or a fool but in spite of all this he was basically a nice guy at heart who firmly believed in following his dreams to the extreme, now ask yourself how many of us really try do that ?

Jon Krakauer is an excellent writer and captures the essence of the protagonist in a simple storyline often drawing parallels between his and McCandless???s life. Other than knowing about the life and death of John McCandless this book is definitely a must read for all those who love outdoor life and fail to see its associated pitfalls.

The Story Contradicts... Yet Inspires.

The story of Chris McCandless confuses, contradicts yet strangely inspires. I read it during a time when I was going through a similar identity crisis in my head... an endless state of confusion and the itch to find my own in this world.

It's a bit heavy for casual reading but it leaves you with a nice message at the end. Read it just for the way it taps into your inner rebel.

For all those who are looking for inspiration

I bought this book after reading one of its quote " Happiness is only real when shared " . Its like the entire book is filled with words and sentences that will make you ache to do what he did. There are no happy endings, just reality in its truest form
A must read for all those who wants to fill the wanderlust inside of them.

beautiful.

Personally, im in love with this book. its a perfect blend of the the protagonist's (Chris McCandless) letters, the authors comments and a sense of deep understanding of the protagonist's search for answers to life. There is a thrill of adventure mixed with life and its realities, giving this book a credibility and making it realistic.
Chris' search in various parts and ways is very similar to one's own search through life. it touches the heart and breaks it and is a must read for those who love adventure, and want to explore life.

i have seen the movie, why buy a book?

for people who are reluctant to buy (as i was) this book because they have seen the movie--the news is that this book is much wider in scope. for starters. apart from chris's story it has interesting stories of people like gene rosellini, carl mc cunn and krakauer himself which are far more intersting than the original story.

and as far as the chris's attitude is concerned am not a big fan. for a guy who loathes evils of capitalism, he hitchhikes in cars, trains which are the most visible products of capitalism. he is just being a burden to other people.

and when he is starving he would have longed to get back to civilization..may be get a burger from Mc Donalds or whatever. he just keeps running away from himself and gets nowhere and if he had survived it would have been a stupid story

i am giving these 4 stars for JON krakauer's adroit writing not McCandless story
