Sir Alan Cottrell is a foremr Goldsmiths' Professor of Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge where he is now a Senior Research Associate in Materials Science. He main research interest is the application of atomic theory to the understanding of the properties of materials, especially theri mechanical properties such as strenght, plastic yielding and fracture.
