An Introduction to the Study of Indian History 2nd Edition (Paperback) Price: Rs.240

An Introduction to the Study of Indian History By D. D. Kosambi is a pioneering work that gives one of the most insightful, astute and radical introductions to Indian history that has been seen in the recent past.

Summary Of The Book

History is not just about the achievements and feats of a few men – warriors, kings, or saints. It also goes beyond the mere dynamics of the socio-economic structures of a society in a particular era. D. D. Kosambi’s An Introduction To The Study Of Indian History propagates these very ideas in a significantly scientific manner.

With a complete novel approach to the study of history, the book uses a scientific methodology, contemporary techniques of interpretation, and analyses basic problems making extremely absorbing and vivid observations.

An Introduction to the Study of Indian History has been hailed by various sections of the society as an epoch-making book with brilliantly formulated and original ideas. Considered to be a seminal contribution to the study of history, it is one of the few books that went on to propagate that Indian history cannot be studied in a manner similar to the study of European history.

The fruit of fecund and patient research and the mature manifestation of a profound mind, An Introduction to the Study of Indian History can best be termed as the perfect scientific amalgamation of facts, meanings and their importance.

It is with this book that DD Kosambi introduced his novel style of studying history -- essentially by applying a scientific and mathematical approach to the subject. Thanks to this unique style and a generous use of examples gained from his own in-depth research, An Introduction to the Study of Indian History was very well received after it was first published in 1956.

Ever since, it is believed to have stimulated the thoughts and minds of thousands of students across the world who have been using it for references to Indian history. The book is also a reflection of how DD Kosambi revolutionised the study of Indian history with his Marxist approach.

About D. D. Kosambi

D. D. Kosambi or Damodar Dharmananda Kosambi was an Indian statistician, Marxist historian mathematician and polymath.

Besides this book, his other famous historical books include The Culture and Civilisation of Ancient India in Historical Outline, Unsettling the Past, Indian Numismatics, Bharatiya Itihasacha Abhyas, Prachin Bharatiya Sanskruti va Sabhyata, Bhagavadgeetha Charitrika Parinamam and Bharat Charitra Parichaya Vyasalu among others.

He is also known for his work in numismatics and for putting together key editions of old Sanskrit texts. His keen interest in the ancient history of the country rose from his emulation of his father Damodar Kosambi who had studied ancient Indian texts. D. D. Kosambi’s radical approach of applying science and mathematics in the study became well-known. DD Kosambi was a proponent of the Chinese revolution and its principles, and a also the chief activist in the World Peace Movement. After his initial schooling in India, he went to Cambridge and later to Harvard in 1924 which awarded him a Bachelor of Arts degree with a summa cum laude. He taught in various prestigious educational institutions including the Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh and Fergusson College in Pune. He was married to Nalini who belonged to an extremely wealthy and reputed family.

scholarly book

Marxist interpretation of history of Aryan coming. Interesting to know how trading is an important aspect human civilization.. But he has not much touched upon the history of extreme South and why and how culturally remained same for the past two millennia. It is also not clear from the book when how Aryans came into this part of the country and how much influence they had . there are so many unknown area in tamil Hisotry. I think we still do not know how subalterns lived in Tamil area during the early Christian era . We know about Kalalpirar rule, perhaps who followed Jainism.
