Summary of the Book

On the eve of Sri Lankan independence from the British, a young Sinhalese boy lives in a simple fishing village. In Colombo, a young girl lives a privileged existence. Years later, the nation is rocked by civil war in 1983. A young Tamil girl is forced into the life of a revolutionary after being raped and turned away by society. The young boy and girl who had ideal lives at the moment of independence are hardened souls now, and they lead a life together in San Francisco. However, the girl dreams of returning to her homeland with her daughter. Her homeland is embroiled in a civil war that promises nothing but chaos and destitution.

About Nayomi Munaweera

Nayomi Munaweera is a Sri Lankan born novelist currently based in Oakland, California. She graduated from the University of California, Irvine and completed a Master’s degree in South Asian Literature at the University of California, Riverside.

Island of A Thousand Mirrors was longlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2012.
