JBDY is one of the classics of Indian cinema and thus far it has not been available in a home video release worthy of its status. This NFDC Collector's Edition release easily bests all previous DVD's. Taken from a digitally restored master the picture looks significantly crisper and more detailed than before. The sound is clean too, nothing stunning but quite acceptable for this low-budget film.
There's a 2nd DVD on this set that contains a 30-min "Director's Perspective", mostly the director and the dialog writer talking about their experience of making the film, worth watching once. Indian film buffs should definitely opt for this release and throw away their previous DVD's.
(A minor quibble, the 16:9 documentary has not been anamorphically enhanced, giving you a stretched picture unless you use the zoom on your TV).
Years back when I got the bug of collecting DVDs, this was among my firsts.. I got a copy on Moserbaer. The very first time I played it, I was not happy as sound was like recorded one and picture hazy as if a cam print or compressed one. However, I thought it is a rare title and in its days DVDs and digitisation was not there.. So, got to be satisfied with this. But, now came this amazing gem from Shemaroo and NFDC. the picture is real that you can even see the ruffles of hairs on actor's head. I wish they could have converted in a way to present it in anamorphich widescreen view also. But this is the best print available for the movie. Loved it... Wish more movies can be made available like this. Even Swades, blue umbrelaa, andaz apna apna on moserbaer also face the same hazy picture quality. Wish cud get a better version soon. Anyways, go and get this truly clear copy of this timeless cult classic. Enjoy!!!!
Brilliant ,satirical and engaging look at corruption . This movie follows two friends Vinod and Sudhir who open up a photography studio only to find wrong things happening from the start, however their attempts lead them to expose the corruption of Bombay . This movies narrative is so funny it weaves itself into incisive effect . Tension is the underlying theme, satire is the view ,corruption is the centre and all this is brought together brilliantly in the funny and darkly humorous imaginable way .This film is one of the best dark comedies in Bollywood history with copious amounts of humour ,silliness and comedy . There is a stellar pefomance by Om Puri and is brilliant and this is a great highlight of the movie . The movie is slow towards the beginning but does not grow boring . Satish Shah is the costar and he plays it brilliantly despite the lack of screen time . Pankaj Kapoor is effective and of course the two leads Nasserudinshah and Ravi Baswani play their roles convincingly . Bhakti Barve is engaging and cool . But the scene in which all the audience will their lungs is the landmark Mahabharata scene in which the pefomances are not only effective or humorous but stellar ,landmark and energitic . A first rate raw ,dark, comic and humorous tale about corruption and greed. Overall a very entertaining film.
Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Golmal (the one starring Amol Palekar) are the benchmarking movies which have set the highest standards in Hindi Movie Comedy.
All comedy directors take inspiration from these two masterpieces.
JBDY is basically a dark comedy. Who can forget De Mello. Tarneja, The Commissioner and the two bumbling but honest photographers (aptly played by Naseer and Ravi Vaswani) as they get entangled into the web of corrupt officals, corrupt newspaper bosses, corrupt builders et al. The climax at the theatre where Mahabharata is being enacted on stage is arguably the best climax for any comedy movie..
While shooting JBDY, probably the producers/directors/actors would never have imagined that their names would forever be etched in people's minds as the ones who were associated with a great movie which is held in high reverence by the film aficionados of Hindi movie cinema.
as the description shows movie runtime is 110 minutes which is around 1hr 52 minute.... bt as i have old VCD of this movie in that its around 2hrs 10 minutes..... as when my friend bought i analyze that in this dvd after the runtime of 2 minute 9 seconds movie skips around 18minute....... so i think that portion was totally damaged so they didnt able to restored in this one.......... 18 minutes is quite long runtime and its missing ... SO SAD .... :( OVERALLL THE QUALITY IS BRILLIANT AS IF WE COMPARE TO OLD COPY that was available...
