A great book!

Jane Eyre is really touching and heart warming. I seriously couldn't put it down and I even sobbed quite a bit as I read this book. Jane Eyre--if she were real--would be my biggest role model. But she still is. You have got to read this book! The fact that it was written long ago and doesn't have the "modern" style shouldn't stop you from reading it because you won't regret it.

A Classic

"I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will."- This line completely summarises the protagonist of the book.
The story begins with the protagonist Jane, a 5 year old, an orphan living with her deceased uncle's family. The narrative deals with Jane's journey to find an identity, love and her deserved place in the world. What is remarkable about the book is the detailed understanding of the characters, especially the protagonist. Nowhere does it get sketchy. Despite her plainness, Jane cannot be ignored as an ordinary character. The strength...

The strength of character and her resolute and well-thought decisions make her unforgettable. She is clever enough to keep herself restricted within the boundaries stated by the society and yet in those confines emerging as an independent and successful woman.

The only character that I found wasn't given the correct share of dialogues was Bertha Mason. I wanted her to speak for herself but the only dialogues or rather appearance in the book she gets is during her growling and snarling snippets. We come to know of her character only through a second person perspective, through Rochester.
Another very good feature of the book is how Bronte plays with the Gothic theme throughout the book, yet not completely making her novel a Gothic in the real sense. A sense of the supernatural always stays in the borderline with sudden appearances in the form of dreams or voices or through the references to Bluebeard's castle. The best part of the book, according to me is Bronte's analysis of Jane's psyche. Its is really remarkable how successfully she understands and interprets the importance of dreams much before Freud's works were published.
The only thing i didn't like about the book is that it gets a tad bit boring halfway through the book. The narrative gets too detailed and stretchy but then again it gains its pace.

YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH JANE EYRE

Never was a man in so much love as Edward Rochester was with Jane Eyre...this is how I like my romance to be..subtle, gentle and heart rending.....this touching and poignant tale will move you to tears and you will enevitably fall in love with Jane Eyre the simple poor girl with heart of gold.

Out of several movie versions of Jane Eyre I found the one starring Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine (breathtakingly beautiful) to be the best. They fit the role to a T... the gruff but honest master of the house and the timid but proud governess.

Needless to say "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte is my favourite romantic novel. If you want to know how it is to fall in love (in the old fashined way) then you can't afford to miss Jane Eyre.

Okay book...

The story is quite simple and sweet. This book is worth a one time read especially on a rainy day, snuggle up in a corner of your balconey and read.... :). However i am a bit dissapointed with the ending of the book. Mr. Rochester's condition in the end was not something that went well with me...

The narration is quite lengthy. Could have conveyed the same story without killing the feel in a fewer words. But yet again...since the book belongs to old times this can be excused..

Value for money

A good buy, worth is what I can say. Also in case you are looking for a larger print then this might not be the one you would like to go for. As its a paperback, one has to be a little careful in handling this book.

A Woman with an indomitable spirit

Jane Eyre is a great work of literature. Undoubtedly, Jane Eyre is the Victorian literature???s strongest female character because of her indomitable spirit, intelligence, wit, strong will and her quality of calling a spade, a spade. There isn???t much going on in the plot as compared to what is... (View complete review)
