From teh sixteenth century, the Japanese introduced a new art style: woodblock prints which could be mass produced and catered to the erotic sensibilities of the merchant class. These Ukiyo-e prints raised erotica to the heights of fantasy. The exploits of the warriors on the battlefield and the boudoir, the depravations of the female ghost, the delights of the geisha and the popular Kabuki plays provide the themes.
