In JavaScript: The Good Parts, Douglas Crockford identifies and highlights a whole set of good ideas that make JavaScript a great object-oriented language for programming.

    Summary Of The Book

JavaScript, like all other programming languages, has its positives and negatives. Unfortunately, this language was developed and released hurriedly, before it could be refined, and hence there are quite a few drawbacks. JavaScript: The Good Parts focuses on the good parts of JavaScript, and reveals those parts that make the language more readable, reliable, and maintainable. The language as a whole does have its drawbacks, but the author does away with those bad features, and presents an effective subset of JavaScript that can be used to create an efficient and extensible code. Crockford, very effectively, shows readers the elegant side of this flawed, but popular language.

The book is meant for all those who develop sites or applications for the web. Divided into 10 chapters, JavaScript: The Good Parts begins with an overview of the ‘good parts’ of the language. The chapters present in the book include Functions, Inheritance, Objects, Arrays, Methods, Regular Expressions, Style, and Beautiful Features. These are followed by the drawbacks of JavaScript, which are included in the 5 Appendices titled Awful Parts, Bad Parts, Syntax Diagrams, JSON, and JSLint.

The book shows us that JavaScript is a highly expressive, elegant, and lightweight language, which can be used for effective coding. JavaScript: The Good Parts is focussed on making sure the user can discover a highly useful and simple language.

Excellent Resource to Master a misunderstood Gem called "Javascript"

If you expect this book to tell you everything there is in JavaScript, then look elsewhere. This book is a compact form of only the most elegant, beautiful and good parts of JavaScript. Its quite unbelievably compact yet maintains the sense of usefulness. The topics covered would help an intermediate or an expect become a "Guru" of JavaScript. The "railroad" diagrams used in this book truly explain the concepts very well. This book also has the best reference for the "JSLint" tool. All in all...

    The Beauty of JavaScript

First some praise for the book:

Before buying this book, I had read a lot of reference material on JavaScript and most of them made sense to me. Coming from C, Java my perspective towards JavaScript was from the procedural and object oriented paradigm. This book showed me something else - the beauty in the language. Douglas Crockford has extracted the best part of the language and presented it in a way that makes sense. (BTW I love the appendix section of Awful Parts, Bad Parts and also the ...

There is a price difference. Two different books with the same title. I am confused.

what is the difference between 2008 and 2011 editions. I am checking the price ratio of other programming books, they seem to be high. But this book cost like 220 bucks. Anyway I bought the book, but still would like to check whether I bought the right one

The One Stop shop for Starters and Intermediates

Even though I had been working in Web Development for quite few years, the use of big frameworks and simply put, JQuery, just minimised the use of the beautiful core Javascript.

Author Douglas takes Javascript out of its shell and presents it beautifully and very much understandable.

Must buy for starters and intermediates. For advanced users, try Javascript Design Patterns by Addy Osmani. You will love it.

And to my surprise, after ordering it at 7:30 in the morning, the book was delivere...

Content is good but not quality of print

I have read most of the book earlier and just wanted to get it as ref. The cover looks good but the pages inside are like photocopies of notes. Dull and smudged. I am taking out 2 stars just for this.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn more about javascript than just tinkering.
