Jinnah: India, Partition, Independence by renowned Indian politician and author Jaswant Singh is a book on the founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and the events surrounding the bifurcation of British India into two nations.
Summary Of The Book
Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah still evokes strong opinions in the Indian subcontinent. He is revered as the iconic ‘Baba-e-Qaum’ (Father of the Nation) in Pakistan and reviled as the architect of the agonizing partition of the country in India. Jaswant Singh, a seasoned politician and diplomat, seeks out to understand and provide a balanced perspective on Jinnah against the political backdrop of one of the most important historical events in the region.
In Jinnah: India, Partition, Independence, Jaswant Singh traces the journey of Jinnah from a proponent of Hindu-Muslim unity in the early years of his political career to a strong advocate of the ‘Two Nation Theory’ towards the later years. The author also presents an argument on the Indian National Congress Party being adamant on several of its policies regarding the governance of India, which led Jinnah to press on his demand for a separate state of Pakistan, to safeguard the interests of the minority community.
Released on 17th August 2009, Jinnah: India, Partition, Independence caused much furore, especially in the political circles in India, ultimately leading to Jaswant Singh being expelled by the party leadership from Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). The book was banned in the Indian state of Gujarat for its alleged negative portrayal of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Home Minister of independent India.
Despite all the controversy around the release of the book and its plethora of critics, Jinnah: India, Partition, Independence was applauded by many as an important piece of work on the historically significant period, which shaped the political climate of the Indian subcontinent for times to come. The author also received much acclaim for his analytical and objective approach towards presenting the story of Jinnah. Jaswant Singh puts across the message that in order to bring continual peace in this strife-torn region, an understanding of the circumstances that led to the ‘abandonment’ of peace is required.
