Book: Jinnah : India Partition Independence
The partition of India, 1947, some call it vivisection as Gandhi had, has without doubt been the most wounding trauma of the twentieth century. It has seared the psyche of four plus generations of this subcontinent. Why did this partition take place at all? Who was/is responsible -- Jinnah? The Congress party? Or the British? Jaswant Singh attempts to find an answer, his answer, for there can perhaps not be a definitive answer, yet the author searches. Jinnah’s political journey began as ‘an ambassador of Hindu-Muslim Unity’ (Gopal Krishna Gokhale), yet ended with his becoming the ‘sole spokesman’ of Muslims in India; the creator of Pakistan, the Quaid-e-Azam: How and why did this transformation take place?

No Indian or Pakistani politician/Member of Parliament has ventured an analytical, political biography of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah, about whom views necessarily get divided as being either hagiographical or additional demonology. The book attempts an objective evaluation. Jaswant Singh’s experience as a minister responsible for the conduct of India’s foreign policy, managing the country’s defence (concurrently), had been uniformly challenging (Lahore Peace Process; betrayed at Kargil; Kandahar; The Agra Peace Summit; the attack on Jammu and Kashmir Assembly and the Indian Parliament; coercive diplomacy of 2002; the peace overtures reinitiated in April 2003).

He asks where and when did this questionable thesis of ‘Muslims as a separate nation’ first originate and lead the Indian sub-continent to? And where did it drag Pakistan to? Why then a Bangladesh? Also what now of Pakistan? Where is it headed? This book is special; it stands apart, for it is authored by a practitioner of policy, an innovator of policies in search of definitive answers. Those burning ‘whys’ of the last sixty-two years, which bedevil us still. Jaswant Singh believes that for the return of lasting peace in South Asia there is no alternative but to first understand what made it ‘abandon’ us in the first place. Until we do that, a minimum, a must, we will never be able to persuade peace to return.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Regarded as an authority on Indian foreign policy and national security, Jaswant Singh is among the most respected names in the country's public life, and in the world of diplomacy. He has come a long way from his home in the desert districts of Rajasthan. Commissioned in the Indian Army when barely nineteen, he went through two wars whilst in service (1962 and 1965) before resigning his commission to pursue a political career. He has served seven terms in Parliament, and, in the BJP-led governments of 1996 and 1998-2004, held charge of six ministries of the Government of India, including External Affairs, Defence and Finance. He is deservedly given credit for dexterously steering India out of the turbulent diplomatic seas encountered in the aftermath of the nuclear tests.

He is now a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, having successfully contested the 2009 elections from the hill state of Darjeeling. Among his several other pursuits are chess, golf, polo, and the promotion of Dingal, an Ancient Indian Language of Rajasthan.

Jinnah : India, Partition, Independence

Jaswant Singh’s Book titled Jinnah, India, Independence and Partition, released on August 17, 2009, sixty years after the partition of Indo-Pak Subcontinent is an apt corrective by a top leader of an otherwise hard-line BJP to the make-believe history of partition. It speaks aloud and somewhat truly about the Indian mindset in defining moments of the mid-20th century. Without mincing his words, Jaswant Singh has squarely put the blame for partition of India in 1947 on Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and the Congress rather than Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. In his book, he evokes momentous episodes that set in motion the movement for partition of India besides the “epic journey of Jinnah from being the ambassador of Hindu-Muslim unity, the liberal constitutionalist and Indian nationalist to the Quaid-e-Azam of Pakistan”. The thesis followed by him, indeed, proves Jinnah not only the Quaid-i-Azam of Pakistan but also of the entire Subcontinent.
Jaswant Singh came across questions from various segments of India society including media and polity even before his book in question was released. During an interview with Karan Thapar in a CNN-IBN exclusive, Jaswant Singh was expressive in upholding his viewpoint saying, “I was attracted by his (Jinnah’s) personality, which has resulted in a book. If I was not drawn to his personality, I would not have written the book… He [not only] fought the British for an independent India but also fought resolutely and relentlessly for the interest of the Muslims of India”. On a question to whether Jinnah was a great man, he said, “Oh yes, self made man who resolutely worked towards achieving what he had set for himself.” While referring to the plight of the Indian Muslims today, he said, “Look into the eyes of the Muslims that live in India and if you truly see through the pain in which they live in to [the] land which they belong; we treat them as aliens”.
Jaswant Singh maintains, “…He (Jinnah) created something out of nothing and single-handedly stood against the might of the Congress and the British who didn’t really like him...Gandhi himself called Jinnah a great Indian. Why don’t we recognise that? Why don’t we see (and try to understand) why he called him that?...I admire certain aspects of his personality; his determination and the will to rise. He was a self-made man. Mahatma Gandhi was the son of a Diwan. All these (people) – Nehru and others – were born to wealth and position. Jinnah created for himself a position. He carved in Bombay a position for himself. He was so poor that he had to walk to work…He told one of his biographers that there was always room at the top but no lift…and he never sought a lift”. Jaswant Singh goes on to say that the Indian leaders had not only misunderstood Jinnah but made a demon out of him. According to him the demonisation of Jinnah was a direct result of the trauma of partition. Singh also said that the view held by many in India that Jinnah hated Hindus was a mistake.
Comparing the leadership of Gandhi and Jinnah, the book says, “[Gandhi’s] had almost an entirely religious provincial flavour while [Jinnah’s] was doubtless imbued by a non-sectarian nationalistic zeal”. Jaswant Singh is certainly right to assert this difference between Gandhi and Jinnah on religious grounds. That’s why Gandhi is both hailed and hated in India – hailed by some for being a great Hindu leader and hated by the others, especially the Dalits, for being proponent of Hindu caste system. By yet others, he is abhorred for aiding the making of Pakistan, as they believe so. This third view is even stronger about Nehru amongst educated Indians. Jaswant Singh somewhat maintains the same tinge. Jinnah too has two opinions about his personality in Pakistan. Some think him to be a liberal who wanted Pakistan to be a secular state and often refer to his August 11, 1947 speech to the Constituent Assembly to support their conjecture. The others believe that he was a religious person who wanted Pakistan to be a purely Islamic state. They too have a lot to quote from his speeches and communiqués. At any rate, he is adored and not abhorred by any segment of Pakistani society.
Anyway, Jaswant Singh’s book would certainly occupy a principal place in the recorded history of partition of Indo-Pak Subcontinent. To note, he is not the only one from the BJP to have endorsed the Quaid and his feasts. Earlier while on a visit to the Quaid’s Mausoleum at Karachi in June 2005, L. K. Advani had inscribed following words in the Visitors’ Book, “There are many people who leave an inerasable stamp on history. But there are very few who actually create history. Quaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah was one such rare individual. In his early years, Sarojini Naidu, a leading luminary of India’s freedom struggle, described Mr. Jinnah as an “Ambassador of Hindu-Muslim Unity…My respectful homage to this great man”. When he received criticism back home, he said, “I have no regrets”. Likewise, on his visit to Minar-i-Pakistan on February 22, 1999, the then Prime Minister of India Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee had recorded these remarks in the Visitors’ Book, “From the historic Minar-i-Pakistan, I wish to assure the people of Pakistan of my country's deep desire for a lasting peace and friendship…I have said this before, and I say it again, that a stable, secure and prosperous Pakistan is in India's interest...India sincerely wishes the people of Pakistan well". He too received a lot of criticism back in India but this did not budge him from his stance even by an inch.
In reality, Indo-Pak relations suffer from the pitfall of historical memories of the partition and more so by the conjured description of the events by pseudo historian, intellectuals and self-seeking politicians with run of the mill approach towards the issues affecting the common populace. India-Pakistan affairs have been especially hostage to the cold-blooded communal leaders and a better part of Indian media, who keep the case of communal divide alive even at the cost of misery of hundreds of millions. If a realization like Jaswant, Advani and Vajpayee takes root in India and people take lesson from whatever they expressed, albeit at the twilight of their political career, I am certain that India and Pakistan can soon take the road to reconciliation and thus resolution of everything that remains up in the air for last over six decades.

*The truth and nothing else.
Review by Ashwini Awasthi
At last and at least, someone came up to tell and write nothing else, but only truth. I don't understand why the BJP is making so much hoo-hulla over it, when everyone knows what the real truth is behind the partition and who all are reponsible. For how long will we bear the so called Nehru and Gandhi family, who were the one who got involved with partition just for the sake of their Leadership.
*sorry
Review by abc
Nehru created blunder from beginning of Indian independence movement and very much supported by his father Motilal. Somehow, the family is ruling India in name of gandhi'Surname though this family is not blood related with Gandhi. These people are making fool to Indian after 60yrs of independence. Anybody, talked against them are penalized and Can you poor Jaswant Singh got victimized after telling the truth and being expelled by BJP. BJP has done just anolther blunder by by expelling such a great intellectual and personality from its party.

What an interesting read. Really factual. Basically it was a war of wills! Gandhi wanted independance the Indian spiritual way, while Jinnah wanted independance on par with the British. Nehru really wanted central rule, while Jinnah wanted Federal rule. Yet all of these great men, who I sincerey believe wanted a united and fair India, couldn't find a compromise! It saddens me!
*Mostly Educated Indians know the truth
Review by SharmaN
Mostly high educated people of India know the reality what happened during Partition and who were responsible but low literate and extremist minded mobby makers always bullyied the society and politics of this country. Mr. Jaswant Singh tried to uncover the secret book again. He probably get more insults and punishments by society makers now. Mr. Jaswant, you did a brave job! Dont think about BJP or party. People makes party great not the party makes people. I hope you will get rewards and fame but be careful too from anti humanists.

*A much needed & timely publication
Review by NN Ojha
Mohd Ali Jinnah has as many admirers in Pakistan as he has critics in India. Either side has been strongly opinionated making an objective assessment of the man's personality almost impossible. Intelligentsia on either side oof the Indo-Pak divide have long since felt the need to understand the true personality of Jinnah, see him as a human being instead of as an angel or for that matter as a demon. After Stanley Wolpert's excellent biography of Jinnah, Jaswant's is the only work that fulfills the much felt need in this direction. In fact Jaswant's book scores ove Wolpert's monumental book as it examines the role and place of Jinnah in the most relevant context of his life, context of the partition of India. It is a must read book by all those who are interested in the current and contemporary history of the Indian sub continent.
*IS BJP PLAYING IN THE HANDS OF WRONG PEOPLE
Review by HS BISHT
BJP IS SEVERALLY FACING THE FACTIONALISM WAR AMONGST ITS LEADERSHIP WHICH IS DIVIDED MULTIFOLD. BJP LEADERSHIP IS LACKING PUNCH & DIRECTIONLESS AND DO NOT HAVE ANY ACTION PLAN FOR THE PARTY VIS-A-VIS NATION. TAKING RECOURSE OF THEIR COLLECTIVE FAILURE IN THE LOKSHABHA AND ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS IN RAJASTHAN, THEY FOUND AN EASY GOAT IN JASWANT SINGH. A CHINTAN BAITHAK WAS MEANT FOR ERADICATING THE FACTIONALISM IN THE PARTY TOP RUGHS AND NOT FOR TAKING ANY DISCIPLINARY ACTION AGAINST ANY LEADER. HENCEFORTH, ANY UNWARRANTED ACTION COULD BE EXPECTED FROM THE DIRECTIONLESS LEADERSHIP OF BJP TOP HONCHOS. WHEN THEY ARE UNABLE TO UNITE AMONG THEMSELVES, HOW THEY COULD LEAD THE NATION. ITS A NATIONAL SHAME. MR.JASWANT SINGH WHO BEING A UNION MINISTER PUT HIS LIFE UNDER DANGER BY FLYING TO KANDHAR IS TREATED LIKE A LOW RUG OFFICE BEARER AFTER PUTTING UP OVER 30 YEARS SERVICE TO THE PARTY. BJP TOP LEADERS HAVE VIOLATED THE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT OF MR.SINGH BY RESTRAINING THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH THUS COMMITTED AN OFFENCE. MR.JASWANT SINGH SHOULD JOIN SOME POLITICAL PARTY WHERE HIS CALIBRE IS RESPECTED AND UTILISED FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NATION.
*Truly Secular
Review by Raman Srivastava
The hard fact is that a real secularist has no place in Indian Political Parties particularly the Congress and BJP. My congratulations to Jaswant Singh saheb to be able to call a spade a spade. Congress being the bigger party had a definite role to play to avoid partition. They hooted Jinnah, they behaved stubbornly and played in to the hands of Britishers. Hardly a handful muslim has his origins out side the undivided India. They are our own blood. Partition was a catastrophe. Religion only is a way of Leading a life in decent manner; no religion teaches us to hate. I am a proud hindu but I see the muslims of this subcontinent as my own bretheren.
The real face of BJP stands exposed. I have always voted for them but now really they have become UNTOUCHABLE.

thank you Mr Jaswant Singh, you are a great Indian for telling the truth. It will help us understand the history better which is completely different to what we read in the text books of both countries
*An honest job
Review by Sachin Sinha
I congratulate Mr, Jaswant Singh for writing such an honest book. We all have right to differ and people may agree or disagree with his opinion and it's also extreemly difficult to provide proof for all the events that he has described in the book. But at the same time in the largest democracy in the world free flow of ideas and opinion is one's right and no body can deny that. If this is not possible in India then i have a doubt on India's claim of being the largest democracy.
Though i am not a historian but i can tell one thing for sure and that is an event like partition and creation of separate state Pakistan can't be done by just a single person Jinnah. There was Nehru, who was equally eager to taste the power for good or other reasons. At the same time, Patel was very much alligned with Nehru and would support him at every step. Gandhi on the other hand was just wanted everybody to be happy and in doing that he many times inflicted pain to Hindus and Muslims.
I admire Jaswant Singh even more now and sort of feel pitty for BJP who just kicked out one of its great soldiers.
*Jaswant : saccha sipahi of indian politics
Review by raj
Wonderful: I have not gone through the book entirely but the details i have come to know are a true account of the preindipendence days. In fact what we have been taught over the years is cooked by a few persons according to their selfish needs. Moreover some of us know facts beyond what we are taught but are reluctant to air these for fear of repercussions. Jaswant Singh is a true patriot who dared to utter the truth even at the cost of his political carrier. This is the only way by which we would be able to know as to what has gone wrong that we were divided at the onset of freedom. By knowing that we can be more vigilant and prudent to solve the problems that culminated into disintegration of india. It does not go with lines of those minds who want it to be remain covered for ulterior motives.

I respect Mr. Jaswant more as compare to the leader of my own homeland, the reason he has courage to tell the truth.

*Difficult; but a different way to think
Review by Kaushlendra Dixit
I have been taught that from childhood that Jinnah was responsible for partition. Being a brahman and interested in religious study and practicing hard core hinduism, I also have dream of Akhand Bharat , there for Jinnah was nothing but a SHAITAN in my eyes. But in 1999 - 2003 during my college (REC Trichy), I cam acrross different opinion about people, thier culture, thier religion etc. Very interestingly many times we (My college friends and me) had hot discussion about Indian indepenpednce role of Gandhi and Nehru. I always used to be on the side of Mahatama Gandhi ( Still I think Mahatma Gandhi is the greatest leader undivided india). Though I was not always against Nehru, but 80% of my frnds used to be against Nehru and 20% supports him but interestengly all of my frnds and my self were against the Jinnah. He was portrayed as a SHAITAN in our books thanks to 50 yrs rule of cogress in India.

After my college I started reading history from independent sources ( thanks to internet) and found very interesting facts. I realized that my hatered for Jinnah is not justified at the same time I started praising Nehru also for his stature and influence during the partition. He is not as bad as my frnds used to discuss and the general perception abt the Nehru (Gandhi) family. In My opinion though Nehru also wanted to have gr8 undivided India but after all he was a human bieng and all his decision could not always be right. So however he has taken right decision ( as per his descrtion) for the prosperous India but unfortunately they did not turned up as he wanted. So Nehru can not be blamed for every thing. Similarly I realized that Jinnah also was in favour of undivided India but circumtences were not favourable and unfortunately he would had to demand for independece country. As per my study initially he just want to pressurize congress to get more involvement of muslims in the independece govt of india.. but during the course of time and circumtences this demand shapened into a demand of different country..

Any ways this is my opinion, based on my study.

This book from such a scholar person definitely have a great respect and value. My bow to Jaswant Singh. I think this sort work must be promoted and let people think differently. Though this is very difficult truth, but in my opinion this is just a differnet of seeing the same thing.

Review by Dr. Z. A. Siddiqui
Jaswant Singh you are great in telling the truth.
What about British role, no movemnt gets independence in 7 years struggle...resolution for Pakistan is passed in 1940 at Lahore, and India is left divided in 1947. Look around how many independence movements are going on since decades...with out any result. British wanted India to be truncated..don't forget... in addition to Gandhi and Nehru's failure to accomodate Jinnah.
Another blunder of Nehru, not able to solve the problem of Kashnir in early days...both the countries are bleeding to attrition because of this folly.

If there would have been nation wide referendum in undivided India for truncating this great land, I beleive majority of Muslims would have voted against the vivsection of India. Partion of India was forced upon Indians by British.
