Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell: A Novel (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.500

At the dawn of the nineteenth century, two very different magicians emerge to change England’s history. In the year 1806, with the Napoleonic Wars raging on land and sea, most people believe magic to be long dead in England until the reclusive Mr Norrell reveals his powers, and becomes a celebrity overnight.

Soon, another practicing magician comes forth: the young, handsome, and daring Jonathan Strange. He becomes Norrell’s student, and they join forces in the war against France. But Strange is increasingly drawn to the wildest, most perilous forms of magic, straining his partnership with Norrell, and putting at risk everything else he holds dear.

About The Author
Susanna Clarke was born in Nottingham in 1959. A nomadic childhood was spent in towns in Northern England and Scotland. She was educated at St Hilda's College, Oxford, and has worked in various areas of non-fiction publishing, including Gordon Fraser and Quarto. In 1990, she left London and went to Turin to teach English to stressed-out executives of the Fiat motor company. The following year she taught English in Bilbao.

She returned to England in 1992 and spent the rest of that year in County Durham, in a house that looked out over the North Sea. There she began working on her first novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.

Fabulous fantasy read

It's Jane Austen mixed with the fantastic and the effect is completely realistic. The "footnotes" are just as interesting as the main story, if not more.

A slow but interesting story

The story is slow paced with too much background information. A delight for literature lovers as it is written beautifully but if you are looking for action and magic, this book is not for you. This book is about Jonathan's journey to find magic, Norrell being wary and jealous of Jonathan and at the same time trying to help him in the world of magic.
Also there is a lot of drama about the Raven King and the ending is a tad disappointing.
Overall a goof read.

Love the book and the binding

When i got the book, i hadn't expected it'd be so big. the pages were thick and the binding was solid and the cover was black with a white raven and it was such a pleasure to just hold it. The book in itself is AMAZING. i absolutely loved the characters and the whole world of 18'th century English magicians :D. Subtly humorous, dark, and terribly addictive this one!
