Moreover, he explains how songdom and stardom combine together in Bollywood, the Hindi film industry, to create a song that sooner or later becomes a part of the psyche of the entire nation.

Excellent book

Raju Bharatan is a legendary music journalist. This is one of his great books. though he does meander a bit, it still makes for very interesting reading. Not for those who are not interested in old hindi film music.

Insiniuations galore

This could have been a great history of Hindi film music. Instead it deteriorates into cheap sensationalism, insinuations that were better off in a locker room or an evening booze session that would loosen tongues and memories. Bharatan's formidable technical knowledge could have been well used but its all used to show "ONLY I was there and ONLY I know the truth". As the earlier reviewer said - borrow it . The book is tepid and mediocre

The book is tepid and mediocre. No one has given Raju Bharathan the carte-blanche to write as he pleases about events and incidents of which, he was never a part. Besides, some of the facts as quoted are blatantly wrong and a figment of his 'over-the-top' imagination. But of course, he has done it quite surreptitiously as he is well aware of the fact that the artistes in question are no longer alive.

The book is not worth a buy.

Spare me the puns...

A thoroughly screwed up writing style. Some incredibly pathetic punning (every third word...well almost). Not so subtle 'been-there-done-that' righteousness. A mind-numbing overload of adjectives -- often double and triple...

A combination of the above would sound the death knell for any book. But thankfully it doesn't for this one. The nuggets of Bollywood music history Bharathan doles out, manage to help the reader just about scrape through this highly 'un'-readable book.

Borrow one. Do n...
