Justice : What's the Right Thing to Do? (Paperback) Price: Rs.394

Considering the role of justice in our society and our lives, Michael Sandel reveals how an understanding of philosophy can help to make sense of politics, religion, morality - and our own convictions. Breaking down hotly contested issues, from abortion, euthanasia and same-sex marriage, to patriotism, dissent and affirmative action, Sandel shows how the biggest questions in our civic life can be broken down and illuminated through reasoned debate. Justice promises to take readers of all ages and political persuasions on an exhilarating journey to confront today's political and moral controversies in a fresh and enlightening way.

Can we be unphilosophical,really?

Modern political systems, and economc and social arrangements, consciously distance themselves from any preoccupation with anything that can be considered moral or philosophical concern. This is the result of the way the Western society has evolved and is now followed by all societies calling themselves modern. But we do have uneasy feeelings over certain events. Is it right for people to profiteer in selling essential commodities following a disaster like a cyclone, in the name of market forces? Is it proper for governments to bail out failing financial institutions using tax payers' money, when the failure is due to mismanagment or unsound investment decisions? And how do we react when the institutions use the doles to pay bonuses to their executives ? Do we object because the doles represent a reward for greed or failure? Is it right when the military establishment honours war veterans who have been killed or wounded for bravery, while excluding those who have been traumatised, considering it weakness? Is it right for you to hire somebody to fight in your place, when you are requisitioned to fight for your country? ( We learn somewhat with shock, that prominent Americans like Andrew Carnegie and J.P.Morgan and the fathers of presidents Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt as also future Presidents Chester A.Arthur and Grover Cleveland actually did this!)How do we decide such issues?

Prof. Michael Sandel takes many such examples from real life situations and explores what should be the basis of considering the rightness of an action or public activity. The old world believed in 'virtue' ; the modern mantra is freedom. Prof. Sandel traces how the ideas of utilitarianism, liberatarianism ,market economy, equality, etc. have shaped our ideas and attitudes and juxtaposes them with the views of Kant, Plato and Aristotle to point out what is missing in the modern approach. Not that the ideas of utility or freedom are wrong but they are inadequate.

Prof. Sandel leaves no one in doubt where his own sympathies are. Justice is not only about the right way to distribute things but also about the right way to value things. ( This theme is developed more fully in his " What Money Can't Buy" ) We have to recognise the moral weight of the community while conceding human freedom. Freedom of choice or maximising utility alone does not ensure a just society.

There has to be a return to some notion of virtue in the public sphere. But is it role of the government to promote virtue, as the ancient Greeks believed? Prof. Sandel concedes that modern societies which are pluralistic do not agree on notions of morality or religion. Public deliberations about hard moral questions may not necessarily lead to agreement. But is that a reason why we should not even try?

This is a deep and thought-provoking book. Prof. Sandel's course on 'Justice' at Harvard is world renowned and is now available on You Tube. But reading his thoughts in print is a different experience, provoking our own reflection. I can't praise the book enough.

Do you love to argue?....Mr sandel will tell you how to do it better.

Philosophy is boring....or so is what I thought. Mr Sandel has written this book in such a way that it seems like a fun game. This book is a mental exercise people. You will be forced to question your convictions. You will be tempted to argue. And argue is what you will.
What is the right thing to do? The decisions you take, the conclusions you draw, how you reached those conclusions? What principals you used to arrive on those conclusions? What if those principles are challenged? What if they are wrong?
These are the questions this book has asked and very eloquently. There are always certain principals underlying our decisions. Only difference is some people know it some don't. This book will help you pinpoint them.
We are living our lives in ignorance. This book will help you see things differently (at least that is how I feel).

Philosophy for the Masses

In his book Michael Sandel deals with misc contemporary issues that affect our daily social and political lives. He intrigues us with the philosophies of Aristotle,Jeremy Bentham,Immanuel Kant,John Stuart Mill in a simplified manner without diluting the content matter. Through innovative thought experiments Sandel challenges our well established notions of morality and justice on subjects like Bailouts, abortion, same sex marriages, euthanasia, voluntary army, racialism, social security etc. and provokes us to reaffirm them

A Good Read

A very lucid and succinct account of the idea of "justice". Would recommend for those interested in philosophy and law. Michael Sandel has raised some pertinent issues and tried to analyse the way we humans think and reason.

Theory of Justice

Aims to provide a comprehensive theory of justice from Aristotle, Mill, Kant and down to John Rawls in the 20th century. A good read written in a very simple language accessible to the non philosophical public as well.
