Kalbela (Bengali) traces a young man’s tumultuous and violent journey through idealistic visions to reality, in the course of which, he also discovers love.

Summary Of The Book

Kalbela (Bengali) begins with the decision of young Animesh Mitra to join the Scottish Church College in Calcutta for higher studies. He leaves the village in North Bengal in which he grew up, and travels to the capital city of the state.

When he arrives in Calcutta, he lands in the middle of a student’s agitation and a confrontation between the students and the police. Animesh is caught in the crossfire and is injured. When he gets out of the hospital, he enrols in the college to continue his studies.

He gets involved in the turbulent students’ political movement of the time. His communist leanings are inspired by youthful idealistic visions of an egalitarian society. He soon gets disillusioned with the party he has aligned himself with, as he feels that they are not really working towards the stated ideal. Inspired by fiery rebel leaders, he joins the Naxalite movement. He has also become romantically involved with a young woman named Madhabilata. But, he chooses to follow his political dream over his love for her.

Madhabilata is pregnant, but Animesh still does not veer from his path. The confrontation between the government and the Naxalites gets more violent. Animesh gets more deeply involved in the movement and his life is irrevocably changed when a plan goes wrong.

Kalbela (Bengali) is a novel that reflects its times, a period of unrest and violence, and students involvement in a high stakes political game. A young man stakes his future, his love and his life for his visionary dreams and almost ends up losing it all.

The book was adapted into film which was released in 2009.

First to review

A rich novel about post-independence time of Bengal

Kalbela is considered one of the best contemporary Bengali novels. Taking us on a journey of a university student who finds the aim of his life to rid this newly independent nation of corruption and to build a new classless society for the generations ahead. Kalbela is as the author himself says, "A love story" to love the people, the country and to love oneself. The female protagonist Madhabilata is a burning example of how a woman can stand up against all odds to hold her beliefs. Mostly Kalbela is a novel which can inspire a person to do something and not to seat idle in front of Injustice …

a very rare intriguing journey...a masterpiece...

rarely have I some across any book, that have stirred me like this one. part of a trilogy Uttorpurush-Kaalbela-Kaalpurush, this one is the best, tracking the journey of a small town youth, in the tumultuous times of the naxalite movement, his clash of values and ideologies, and how he gets pulled up into the movement. He doesn't emerge victorious at the end, loses everything,(or does he ?), and that in essence, makes the journey much more enjoyable and a fantastic read.

20 years back, the "student poliitcs" in Bengal forced my generation of Bengalies to seek for a living outside Bengal. We understood late...very late, after we have whitewashed our future...that the Bengal Student Political vortex just sucks blood from the young students to make them fit to be an Auto Rickshaw Driver! We are still doing so...we will keep on doing so...untill we totally destroy ourselves. This book should be reccommended for reading to each Bengali Student to understand what futre lies ahead for students who are used as napkins by the Bengal Politicians.
