The only person you do not know is yourself

‘Know Thyself’ is a comprehensive study of Spiritualism. The author Gian Kumar has tried to share his thoughts with honesty and sincerity, even admitting he is not an enlightened soul, but one who is ‘aware’. It is this awareness we have to bring into the realm of our consciousness, about who we really are. What part does each of us have to play in our relation to the Universe?
This book has triggered my thought processes; it has started me on self-reflection, a journey new to me. Like most p...

    Religious Intolerance

We in India, consider ours a Secular nation, and have believed in this as far back as I can remember. Yet in recent times there have been clashes between religious groups, with a few instigators leading the riots.
Gian Kumar, in his book ‘Know Thyself’ has shed some light on this by comparing Spirituality and Religion, and shown how people have misused the latter for inciting trouble. Some religions advocate one God over the other. This leads to separatism and intolerance. He says, ‘Even tod...

My first book and it is a gem

I am not a great follower of books on spirituality and philosophy. I was recommended to read this book by one of my friends and I would say that it is worth every time and moment that a reader would spend on it. Gian, the author, has been able to drive the point home in a very clear manner. For someone like me, who never read a book on this subject, it made complete sense. Looking forward to reading other books of this series.

    Spiritual and not religious

Having read the book once, I know I will definitely go back to it many more times. What has captured my attention is that, rather than laying out dogmas and rules on the subject, the author has, in a subtle manner, started me on my own process of internalizing and analyzing certain issues in my life. For instance, being spiritual, yet having a certain relationship with my God, does that make me religious? No, says Gian Kumar, since the God you seek outside is within you.

    Spiritualism and me

I have been a yoga practitioner as far back as I can remember. I was therefore familiar with meditation and would always look for that quiet corner where I could be with myself and my thoughts for awhile. In spite of this, the word Spiritualism as such, never entered my mind.
In his book, the Author Gian Kumar says, “It is Spiritualism which teaches the mind how to be open to the presence of the now and all that exists in the presence of the now.” Simply understood, it means that whenever w...

    Mind over Matter

Working of the mind has always baffled Science, so maybe if one looks at it from the spiritual point of view one could understand it better. This is what Gian Kumar has done in the first book of his 3-book trilogy, ‘Know Thyself’. He tells us that according to Eastern study, “Mind is nothing but a part of universal consciousness.” All the knowledge from the environment is absorbed in the mind, from where neural processes discern and discriminate, retain or let go of unnecessary information. ...

    Fear of Death

Witnessing the death of a loved one reminded me how vulnerable and helpless we are in the face of death. This was a turning point in my life. I started seeking from Spiritualism, the guidance and inner strength I lacked to face such eventualities. On the recommendation of a friend, I bought this book ‘Know Thyself’ by Gian Kumar. I’m glad I did. In simple language, he explains that whatever we seek is not outside of us, but within. One does not need gurus or mantras for guidance. In fact, t...
