Coming from the team that gave us the wonderful & quirky 2010 sleeper hit âBand Baaja Baraatiâ that showcased Delhi at its finest, I had pinned a lot of hope on this film.
It was then only anticipated that the Yash Raj Films be tempted to repeat the success formula of BBB.
Did they succeed?
Well, no and yes.
Despite some limitation in the script and some rather implausible situations (but then we donât really see Bollywood for realism, do we?) Ranveer Singhâs second film is no match for the first but still a pleasant, escapist fare if you sweep aside memories of BBB and view it as a stand-alone film.
Maneesh Sharma at the helm, effectively (and rationally) captures the buzz of Mumbai, Delhi and Lucknow and Goa where the feel and look is real and the picturisation is a matter-of-factly, non- touristy, almost making the cities a part of the cast.
The story line (oh yeah?) has been developed (?) by Aditya Chopra and like always, he has also focused on the âlookâ of the actors (remember Dhoom 2?) and his Midas touch is palpable in Ranveerâs Singhâs beach scene (where supposedly he starved for 48 hours to get that lean mean machine look and judging by the audience reaction, he has succeeded) supplemented by Anukshka Sharmaâs post interval black micro-bikini scene: pleasing all segments of the audience.
(This is not the first time she has worn a bikini for a film: That credit goes to Badmaaash Company)
The film has been heavily âinspiredâ by a 2006 Hollywood film John Tucker Must Die: about three jilted girls who plan to make the hero pay for having dated them, together, clandestinely.
This is another attempt by Yash Chopra's film to venture into con stories (in fact the tag line of the film is Rom-Con which is a take-off on Rom-antic Com-edies that are generally called Rom-Coms or even Chick Flicks) after Bunty Aur Bubli (a big hit) and Badmash Company( average)
There is an appealing twist at the end and like all films nowadays, the best songs are saved for the end title scrolls. Make sure you sit till the end.
Anukshka Sharma seems to be a permanent Yash Raj favourite as her three film contract has now extended to a five films.
The character of Ranveer ( and credit should go to the script writer) is endearing as in spite of him conning the girls and taking off with their money (and their hearts) he never takes advantage of the girls ( of the girls confesses that he did not even kiss her) in the true sense.
The message seems to be: Itâs OK to loot but not OK to lust.
The story is uncommon by Indian standards and since Flipkart has already given the synopsis, along with the trailer, I am not focusing too much on it, here.
Ranveer Plays the role of a swindler and how he uses three girls to rip-off the money and how the three (rather unconvincingly) take the help of Anukshka to extract Badla from the hero, with unanticipated results, The three girls play the part well
(1) Parineeta Chopra (Priyanka Chopra's cousin) plays a regular Delhite and was asked to put on some weight to get the chubby and âhealthyâ look. She is in reality a Finance graduate from UK and was working as a PR consultant at Yash Raj films. Her second film is also by Yash Raj and will be directed by the Do Dooni Char director Habib Faisal, with Arjun Kapoor (son of Boney Kapoor.)
At the time of writing (Feb 2012) this she has already won the Filmfare and Screen award(s) for the best newcomer debut.
(2) Dipintika Sharma, the sultry Assamese, married, ex-model, a Miss India finalist and significantly, also Abhishek's ex girlfriend who was rather un-ceremoniously dumped by him before he went on to fresher pastures (read, ahem, Aishwarya.) plays the hard core business woman who co-ordinates the entire ploy to get back at Ranveer. She uses a techie to find out the con manâs whereabouts from the caller tune of his cell phone: maybe, a nod to Shah Rukh Khan ( Yash Chopraâs blue eyed boy) as the tone is from the film Baazigar.
(3) Aditi Sharma (famous in advisements for Dominos and Tata Sky and recently seen and appreciated in Mausam.) plays the 3rd part of the triangle as a naïve Muslim widow and has an understated role but sill impresses.
People may have a problem with Anuksha Sharmaâs ( she plays the girl Ishika Patel/Desai who is hired by the trio of cheated girls to get back at Ranveer) character ( though this is a limitation of the script) entry as she comes late though her introduction brought lots of Wah-wahs from the audience.
The ending feels rushed and though acceptable, could have been handled well.
The songs are well choreographed like all Yash Raj Films and liven up the narration.
Technically the film is faultless and looks brilliant on Home Viewing.
For that reason itâs recommended.
This average grosser is a good film and makes for a nice evening out, which may not be repetitive on second viewing but definitely worth a first time dekho.
That's what comes to mind when watching this movie. There's not much to read into the characters after someone sets it rolling on the premise that it's ok to cheat a girl/lady/woman and leave her and her family devastated if you don't sleep with her. So, it isn't really a movie that you want to put your brains to work on, its one of those movies where you laugh at the funny bits, croon to the good music and go all 'awww' and 'mushy' during the romantic moments.
As the previous review pointed out, its definitely worth a watch if you're in the mood for some light hearted fun movie whilst spending the day at home with someone for company of course.
Even though the story revolves around Ranveer Singh's character (Ricky) Anushka Sharma is someone you will look forward to watch in this movie in every scene. You will kind of miss her presence in the scenes that involves other stars only.
Story is predictable but worth a watch....
Parineeti has surely the cutest character with the most natural acting one can possible do...
This movie Ladies vs Ricky bahl....is just awesome.
It's really nice....one can watch it.....it'S not that lengthy that you may get bored...the songs are awesome...the picture quality is very good......also they give you another movie bundled with this movie..absolutely free....which also has a good picture as well as sound quality.
so I suggest .....buy it...it's indeed a good pass time...trust me I had bought it from Flipkart some days back...and got it within 2 days.....nicely packed , delivered at my door step.
So don't hesitate just buy it...and you will be satisfied.
