Land of the Seven Rivers: A Brief History of India's Geography (Hardcover) Price: Rs.460

Moving from the geological beginnings of the subcontinent to present day Gurgaon: from the Stone Age to the Information Age, this is a riveting and wry book, full of surprises!

Did the Great Flood of Indian legend actually happen? Why did the Buddha walk to Sarnath to give his first sermon? How did the Europeans map India?

The history of any country begins with its geography. With sparkling wit and intelligence, Sanjeev Sanyal sets off to explore India and look at how the country's history was shaped by, among other things, its rivers, mountains and cities. Traversing remote mountain passes, visiting ancient archaeological sites, crossing rivers in shaky boats and immersing himself in old records and manuscripts, he considers questions about Indian history that we rarely ask: Why do Indians call their country Bharat? How did the British build the railways across the subcontinent? What was it like to sail on an Indian Ocean merchant ship in the fifth century AD? Why was the world's highest mountain named after George Everest?

About the Author

An Eisenhower Fellow, he was named Young Global Leader for 2010 by the World Economic Forum. Sanjeev is a prolific writer who divides his time between Delhi and Singapore. Refreshing take on Indias History through a geographical perspective

A superb book explaining the history of India through its geography. The Book starts with R1a1 genes and its origins, goes on to cover Out of India Theory with conviction, Harappa civilization, the lost river Saraswati , Vedic culture and works, Gangetic plains, Medieval India kingdoms, Delhi sultans, Mughal, Europeans and everthing in between. It's a mix of travelogue, Geography and History so i found it really refreshing and interesting. It covers many little known places like Hampi Vijaynagar, Ujjain, Western Ghats, Mahabalipuram, Deccan. Also answered many questions which i had in mind... ()

1) Why India has so much of gold in households even though we have very few gold mines.
2) Why Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath and not at Gaya / Rajgir.
3) What is the connotation of the term "Aryan" .
4) Why the ruler of Mewar were called Rana ?

A good read on our History

A good read for anyone who is interested in Indian History. It answered many question I had in my mind, like why is India called Bharath, what gave Britishers an edge over Portugese and other invaders, and many more that I hadn't even thought of. Give it a read to get a glimpse of our heritage.

PS: I brought the book from outside for Rs 399. Should have brought from flipkart. Still was worth it. Was what I was searching for :)

Poor

As the About the author column mentioned in website says "He is also a writer in his spare time", we should already know that this book is not written by a writer but a part time writer who writes in his spare time only. After going through the book you will find as if someone is shoiwing you the highlights of a match and that too with silly commentary.
Avid readers please dont go for it. wastage of money.
