"So here's the truth about me: I don't always go around making people happy and helping lost puppies. I don't smile all the time and make my parents burst with pride. I'm not perky, and I don't have a lot of friends who come over to my house to talk about boys and do each other's hair. I don't always learn an important and valuable lesson from everything that happens to me. But I'm guessing you probably don't either." Meet Amy, a fourteen-year-old girl whose life is about to change. Her dad plans to open a bed and breakfast in the town of Birch Point, meaning her family must move across the country to the Northern California coast. Amy has to leave behind her home, her friend, and the school paper where she was treated like a seasoned veteran. At the Birch Point Beacon she's the youngest greenhorn on staff, and the tightly knit group of girls she works with won't give her the time of day. Even this is bearable to Amy, but her life spins out of control when her family goes into debt trying to renovate the old Victorian bed and breakfast. Soon her home life is just as unstable as her school life. Severed from everything that once defined her and gave her comfort, Amy doesn't know what to do. At the brink of despair, Amy confides in her mother, who gently encourages her to seek God's guidance. But Amy quickly learns that God's answers to prayer are never what we expect.
