Book: The Legend Against All Odds It starts with the struggle between my father's perception of Western education, and how I had to break the village norms to have the right to Western education. It goes back to the days of the 50s and 60s when most African countries were involved in some form of political ascendance and independence from colonial rule. This leaves the students with the awesome responsibility of being voices for justice, human rights, and of freedom for Africa. Most governments' reactions to such efforts is by stifling freedom of speech, unless it is in praises of the rulers, and invocation of threats to national security or the public order and peace. My struggle for the down trodden and objective of providing free medical aid to villagers in the Gambia was reinforced by ideals I picked up while a student in Michigan, USA. It eventually led to my returning to Gambia and establishing of the Manding Medical Centre.
