The Legends of Amrapali (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.117

The story about The Legend Of Amrapali is of destruction and great suffering caused by the stubborn desires of a single man who was drunk with power and arrogance.

Summary Of The Book

Around 500 B.C., Aryavart was a land comprising a number of prosperous kingdoms. Among them, the most outstanding one was the Vajji Confederacy, which was among the first democratic republic known by mankind. Vaishali was the capital of the confederacy and the renowned Lichchavis clan. It was a center of political and commerce activity and also Amrapali’s blessed motherland.

The Legend of Amrapali is about Amrapali who was a clever, famous courtesan. She was pretty, talented and had all the qualities that courtesans living in the city of Vaishali were meant to have. Vajji confederacy was ruled by king Manudeva. Manudeva becomes infatuated by Amrapali when he catches a glimpse of her while attending Gautama Buddha’s discourse. From childhood, Amrapali has been in love with Pushpakumar, whom she wanted to marry. The king’s proposal for making Amrapali his queen is rejected by her father. Hence, the king traps Pushpakumar in a false spying case and simultaneously arranges for declaring Amrapali as “Nagarvadhu”, a position that requires her to entertain the king along with the other nobles of the king’s court. While escaping from prison, Pushpakumar is killed, which forces Amrapali to become the state courtesan. The story then weaves around Amrapali’s attempts to take revenge against Manudeva for murdering Pushpakumar, and the difficult situations she finds herself in.

Different from the usual breed of authors - a fresh breeze

It was the subject of the book that made me order it and i wasn't quite sure as to what to expect from it since i hadn't read any of Anurag's earlier works. The book however came as a pleasant surprise and by the end of the first chapter i knew that i was going to spend a better part of my Friday night in finishing it - which i eventually did.

The story is fast paced, beautifully written and contains all the elements that one can expect from a good book - drama, twists, love, sex, glamour, passion and deceit. Even peripheral characters (particularly the Mongolian Warrior and Amrapali's fri...

The story is fast paced, beautifully written and contains all the elements that one can expect from a good book - drama, twists, love, sex, glamour, passion and deceit. Even peripheral characters (particularly the Mongolian Warrior and Amrapali's friend, Prabha) leave a lasting impression on ones mind through their sheer depth. The description of political maneuvers from a period 2500 years back in time is such that it could fit in perfectly with the antics adopted by some of the politicians of today, reminds you of the Borgias. Most importantly, after finishing the book i was left with a satisfied feeling that i had learnt something new... a feat that most new-age authors don't even attempt with their versions of chick books. Kudos to Anurag for coming out with a beautiful book - one that i will recommend very highly and which takes us back to our glorious past...

More than an engaging read!

I had black-listed the publisher, Srishti Books, because of one of their titles i had accidently picked up. I think it was called... Few Things Left Unsaid... or something like that! A horrible book with terrible language and a nonsensical story line that had turned me off bigtime and i had vowed never to experiment with the so called 'bestsellers' from this particular publisher. However it was the subject of the book, The Legend of Amrapali that made me take one more punt and i was glad that i did so.

However it was the subject of the book, The Legend of Amrapali that made me take one more punt and i was glad that i did so.

The book, while based in historical times, is completely relevant even today. Its rapid narration and fast pace made me as engrossed as i would be while reading a Sydney Sheldon or a Jeffrey Archer. Once i began the book, i simply couldn't put it down. When i completed reading it, i felt accomplished, since i had learnt something new from it as well... the story of an enigma from our glorious past. Anurag Anand was most impressive with his prose and that only makes me wonder as to what is an author like him doing with a publisher like Srishti? Anurag, if you are reading this... move on dude.. The Penguins, Hatchettes and Rupas of the world are waiting... Your book deserves to be a Bestseller and Srishti is not going to make that happen!

Looking forward to reading more from this promising author!

One of the best books i have read in a long time..

Amrapali, we all know is an enigma and her grandoise life has been presented in various forms time and again. Only, most of the litreature available treats her like a larger than life entity, a girl who was 'meant' to be what she became. However, this was the first book where i could read and visualise the trauma of a normal young girl and her plight as she embarked on a path that eventually made her the 'Nagarvadhu' we know.

To me what was particularly astounding was that the author, a male, manages to capture the emotions of a female heart with remarkable clarity - an amazing feat indeed. I am amazed that my preceding reviewer would term this work 'myopic'.. and just so i would like to ask him the names of the other titles he suggests we read.

I enjoyed the book thoroughly.. and will recommend it to everyone who is looking for a gripping story, beautifully worded and presented in a fashion that you would not want to put it down.

Worth to admire

The Legend of Amrapali is a book that will take you to the high of well designed literature. It has all the grip you want in a book. You will enjoy it and surprised by it's so mature language.
It's not like that well formed novel where you will find every drama and action have a directed path. This book has a real charecter with real need and real struggle of that time period of era.
About the story, it's not the whole truth of amrapali in a certain way but it still manage the genre and bitterness of her torched life and her well talented performance on the stage of fate. Beautifully...

About the story, it's not the whole truth of amrapali in a certain way but it still manage the genre and bitterness of her torched life and her well talented performance on the stage of fate. Beautifully written and explored by writer, sometimes it seems more explored than required but still not boring, maybe you won't even recognize that. The story is tight and well planned executed.
I have been looking ahead for more creation from Anurag Anand. It has been a worth read.
A huge Thanx to Anurag...

History Comes Alive with Anurag

Vijayanthimala Bali as Amrapali was truly enchanting in the movie ages ago. Her beauty was mesmerizing and the character enchanting. Nothing could beat that visual treat or so I had thought. But I was mistaken. Anurag Anand's Amrapali rises from the ravishing mound of the written word like a young woman in all her feminine glory and self-respecting valor. When I finally finished reading, The Legend Of Amrapali, I was left wanting for more.

But I was mistaken. Anurag Anand's Amrapali rises from the ravishing mound of the written word like a young woman in all her feminine glory and self-respecting valor. When I finally finished reading, The Legend Of Amrapali, I was left wanting for more.

From being that little infant found under the mango tree, Amrapali to the girl of seventeen whom "Nature seems to have modeled..in luxury, applying generous fills in areas that needed accentuation and remaining tight-fisted with the rest of her structure. Her well defined curves swayed with a tranquil grace when she moved, fuelling an unquenchable thirst and longing among those who dared set their eyes on her."
From being that young girl who became one with Nature as she danced, to the young woman whose heart ached for the only man she ever loved,
"The ache of losing someone or something when you are so close to making it your own that you can reach out and touch it, is far overbearing than that of losing something you always had or contrastingly had never dreamt of having."

Anurag Anand's poetic language grips the senses of the readers making them re-live the life of Amrapali swaying with her emotions, her pain and her ability to come out victorious despite all odds.

Anurag Anand's book makes the historic apsara-like danseuse Amrapali come alive as she determines where her path lies as the lonely soul, beautiful dancer and the shrewd warrior. The Nagarvadhu of Vaishali, Amrapali leaves nobody unaffected in this 'enchanting saga buried with the sands of time.'
Anurag Anand does full justice to this wonderful character ending the novel at a juncture where you are left with all your senses invigorated wanting to know more about this beautiful person and her life.

If a book can do this, it is definitely worth reading! Don't you think so?

Avoid

The book is best avoided. It was a drag right from the beginning and instead of a narrative, or story seems more of a translation of the original text. Some how this one did not gel with me. Avoidable at best. Am giving 2 stars for the time and effort everyone behind the book put in. (View complete review)

Engaging throughout!

Maybe it is the story, or maybe it is the lucid writing style....the book is worth the money and time. For the people who like racy stories would love this one. After a long time, got my hands on a book that satisfied the reader in me. In short the book has a simple story that will be appreciated... (View complete review)
