Letters To A Young Poet: A Beloved Classic Of Writerly Wisdom is a compilation of ten letters written by Rainer Maria Rilke to Franz Kappus. Through the pages of this book, Rilke’s voice has reached out to aspiring artists and writers. Written over a span of six years, it is an amalgamation of thoughts and feelings. The issues raised in the letters are still relevant in the present-day world. Rilke’s thoughts and musings in this book are also influenced by the French sculptor, Rodin. The gamut of subjects covered in these letters is vast, from the value of faith to the depths of loneliness.
Rainer Maria Rilke was a Bohemian-Austrian poet. In an age of disbelief and solitude, Rilke’s themes pertaining to difficulties of clear communication earned him a unique position among poets of all time. He is regarded as the transitional figure between the poets of the traditional and modernist era. Death, roses, and figures from Greek mythology appeared as motifs in Rilke’s work. His best work is Duino Elegies, a compilation of ten elegies in German written over a period of ten years. Apart from Letters to a Young Poet, another famous prose work by Rilke is The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. It is semi autobiographical and his only novel. Among other notable works of Rilke are, Sonnets to Orpheus, Stories of God and over four hundred poems in French which he dedicated to his homeland of choice.
