John Morison was able to use original manuscripts from Jeremiah Smith in compiling this book. The Honorable Jeremiah Smith was a member of congress during Washington's administration. He also served on the United States circuit court and was Chief Justice for New Hampshire, The reader is able to get a first hand account of such memorable events as Jay's treaty, lectures on Washington and Franklin, and the Judiciary act of 1813. The reader is also given a glimpse into Smith's private life with letters to his wife and letters concerning her illness and death. Toward the end of his life Smith wrote about education and religion in America. This is a wonderful in depth look at the many facets of a man who helped shape the beginning of the United States.
