A NEW VOICE IN ANGLO-INDIAN POETRY

The Poems of Sumita Misra???
Love is a major theme of her poems. The imagery she employs is forceful, unique, as in the opening quotation. Again, using an apt imagery of transformation, she sings of the alchemy of love and its fulfillment in words of sweet innocence:???I come to you
A desperate chrysalis
Searching flight ???
Give me your breath:
Untie my wings,
Watch me soar ???
??????away?????????But the paths of true love did never run smooth, as the Bard said, and the ominous thoughts of an inevitable, impending separation are never far from the mind of the lover:
???In a universe slidi...

Watch me soar ???
??????away?????????But the paths of true love did never run smooth, as the Bard said, and the ominous thoughts of an inevitable, impending separation are never far from the mind of the lover:
???In a universe sliding to a fateful entropy
To catch a few slivers of time
Before the darkness intervenes.???
And here is one of the most beautiful descriptions I have come across of the act of love:
???In this forsaken planet of sighs
The spaces of eternity are created
In the shared breath.
The dance of bodies was original worship,
Its after tremble a prayer.???
Love in its basic sense is worship. It reminds me of some of the most sacred (and beautiful) Vedic hymns envisioning the creation of the universe which are replete with sexual imagery

Love poetry commonly harps on love permeating the pores of the body; Sumita Misra is conscious of our ???inheritance of clich??s??? and uses an uncommon (and unsavoury) image of a reptile lover to striking effect, reminiscent of the poetry of Kamala Das:
???You
Devious, reptilian,
Wriggling into all the corners of my days
Weaving through the ridges of my mind.???
But she doesn???t talk only of love and betrayal. In an unusual poem on the New Year, Sumita likens it to ???a whore soliciting with sly eyes/ Taking as payment, another slice of youth??? ??? rather extraordinary imagery that!
Poverty surrounds us in India and we learn not to see it. But it stares her and she admits of ???the stark reproof of hungry eyes??? and chides herself:
???The misery of the masses is an indistinct rumble
While one???s own is a deafening shriek.???
I like her cocky imagery about God ??? hark her pronouncement:
???God, your basic condom in unholy situations!???
Although she says in one of her poems, ???For all my voyages inward/ I have touched no virgin island,??? she is original and refreshing. I will end with this unusual imagery about the mind:
???The mind is a black hole
Sucking in questions,
And giving no
Answers from its dark core.???
