Life of Pi (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.1036

Life of Pi is an adventure novel that follows the life of Piscine “Pi” Patel, focusing on his ordeal of being stranded out at sea, and allegorically exploring the concepts of religion and spirituality.

Life of Pi is the story of Pi, a young boy hailing from Pondicherry, India. Through his adventures while stranded out at the sea, the book metaphorically tackles the topics of religion, spirituality, and practicality. It is set in the late 1970s, and presents real events and places in India.

The book is divided into three sections. In the first section, the protagonist Pi, recounts his childhood days. He was born Piscine Molitor Patel, named after a certain swimming pool in the country of France. Tired of being relentlessly ridiculed as “Pissing Patel”, Piscine shortens his name to Pi while in secondary school.

Pi’s father owns a zoo in Pondicherry, and as a family, they lead a fairly affluent life. In addition to his birth religion of Hinduism, Pi follows Islam and Christianity, seeking to love god through all three religions.

In the second section of the book, Pi’s father decides to move to Canada with his family, to escape the political scenario in India. The family embarks on a journey to Canada aboard a compact Japanese freighter. They also have some of the residents of their zoo in tow.

Just a few days into their journey, disaster strikes in the form of a violent storm. Their ship sinks, leaving behind an odd assortment of survivors: Pi, a limp zebra, a female orangutan, a hyena, and a Bengal tiger called Richard Parker. The five of them are stranded on a lifeboat, cast adrift in the untamed waters of the Pacific.

Guided by strong survival instincts, each one of them does whatever it takes to don the mantle of the alpha animal. Eventually, it’s a face-off between the fittest, and the outcome could swing either way.

The third section focuses on the conversation of two Japanese maritime officials as they try to ascertain the cause of the shipwreck.

After being rejected by five publishing houses, Life of Pi was published in September 2001 by Knopf Canada. It has sold more than seven million copies worldwide. It has also won several awards, including the Man Booker Prize for Fiction (2002), and the Asian/Pacific American award For Literature in the Best Adult Fiction category (2001-2003). An illustrated edition of the book was released in September 2007. The film adaptation, directed by Ang Lee, is scheduled for a November 2012 release.

Belief is what bonds you with the Life of Pi!

Even though the Life of Pi is a fiction, somewhere in the first quarter of the book, Yann Martel makes you believe that it is a biography of someone (Pi) who was born in Pondicherry, India, grew up till his teens, with a zoo in his backyard, and with the political scene in India becoming unstable (1977), the family along with a few animals that remained behind, after selling off most of the zoo inhabitants, boards a Japanese cargo ship to Canada. And after this act of making you believe, all the action takes place in the 227 days that runs between the days Pi gets into the sea as a castaway... ()

And after this act of making you believe, all the action takes place in the 227 days that runs between the days Pi gets into the sea as a castaway in a 27-feet lifeboat with a 450 pound Bengal Tiger and till the day he lands in Mexico. It is this belief that makes you cling to the novel and move forward catching hold of the link one after another, but at a slow pace, and when there are times just when you think the links are falling apart (losing interest), belief bonds you together with the story. But at certain places, you get the idea that a few facts about the South-Indian culture are a bit incoherent (just 2% of the entire story telling). Altogether, a great read, no doubt about it!!

indeed a story that will make you believe in God

Truly worth Man Booker prize...

What a story.. I cant think anyone could write so many chapter about life on a lifeboat..

It has a perfect blend of a book, at least for me. It has story, it has its spiritual content, it has the interesting aspect about it, and it has - a very impressive part - of facts and knowledge... At the moment, I think I can tame a tiger, if I am stranded with it on a lifeboat surrounded by ocean... If not tame a tiger, I am pretty sure I can live off land, on the water, in a lifeboat!!

And I also think, no person, after reading this book, will ever give up his wil...

Goes to my favorite books shlef..

It is indeed a story that will make you believe in God (you will understand, if you've read the author's note of the book)...

Brilliant Work

I had bought ???Life Of Pi??? way back in 2010 seeing that it has won the prestigious Man Booker Prize but the other books in my stock kept me busy. One day when I visited a mall, I saw movie posters of the same book which said, ???One Boy, One Boat, One Tiger?????? and it was that line and hype that compelled me give this book a priority.

???Life Of Pi??? is a fable of a Tamil boy named ???Pi???. His father owns a zoo in Pondicherry (India) but due to some happenstance their family decides to migrate to Canada. Many birds and animals of their zoo also travel with them on the same ship. Du...

???Life Of Pi??? is a fable of a Tamil boy named ???Pi???. His father owns a zoo in Pondicherry (India) but due to some happenstance their family decides to migrate to Canada. Many birds and animals of their zoo also travel with them on the same ship. During the voyage, a nocturnal hurricane gain supremacy over the ship and leave Pi as the only human survivor. He finds himself on a life boat with a hyena, a zebra (with one leg broken), a female Orang-utan and 450 Pound Bengal tiger named, Richard Parker. The rest of the pages of the book tells about the struggle and adventure, hunger and hope, loneliness and belief & defeat and determination. Pi, who explores the deep affairs of sprituality in his early age helps him in his exertion and endeavor.

I really loved the book as the book circumnavigates around elements like desire, belief, motivation, hope, expectation, determination, God, nature, invisible forces etc. Some people say that the the ending was not good but according to me, it was fine. I completed the book in 3 days. I rate it 4/5.

A Castaway in the Pacific

This is a story of a castaway adrift in the Pacific Ocean, in the company of a tiger. Plot wise, it doesn???t seem to offer much in terms of the potential for a gripping narrative. But a gripping narrative it indeed is. The castaway???s survival strategies and his resourcefulness make for absorbing reading. But it is much more than that. Through the eyes of the castaway, the book looks at the universal themes of despair, hope, belief, courage, a sense of purpose, the will to survive. It is about all this as much as about survival itself. The narrative may strike some readers also as an allegory for life???s journey, and the challenges, adventures and joys along the way. At another level, it can be interpreted in psychological terms. Then it can be seen as a way of dealing with loneliness, of invoking childhood and re-living family ties..

Good - as per expectation

The story and the take on religion is quite interesting. As is the whole setting of being stranded in the sea with a tiger. Book is better than the film! (View complete review)

Horrible Starting!!!!

Interesting tale

An overdose of fantasy for my taste. The book turns essay-like at various junctures because of its descriptive narrative. Yann Martel deserves admiration for flying marvelously on the wings of imagination. I'm curious to watch the movie and will do so shortly. (View complete review)

Riveting book. Could not keep it down once I got started.

Author has interwoven a lot of seemingly unrelated aspects like God, religion, zoos, tiger behavior, survival seamlessly to create a beautiful story. Highly recommended for book lovers. After having read the book, the movie seems to pale in comparison.
