Just after the war, in 1881, Rob is home and working in a bank, trying to leave the war behind. He falls in love with his assistant Frances, who is asked to come and visit her parents, only to find out that they are deeply in debt. The only way for the debt to be cleared is for Frances to marry well-to-doWales Watson. Although by now she is in love with Rob, Frances agrees to marry Wales for her parents' sake. Upon returing home, she plans a dinner to tell Rob what is going on. She also tells him that her feelings for him have not changed and they spend the night together. Frances marries Wales, and soon she discovers that she is expecting a child. Is it Rob's or Wales'? Frances still being in love with Rob tries to spend time with him, thinking that Wales does not know. In turn Wales hires a private investigator to follow Frances, and he finds out that she has been seeing Rob. He begins to realize the strange behavior. What will Wales do?
