Description

This is a story about a Bengali family in Calcutta that is decaying as the society around it is coming down.

Summary of the Book

In 1967, Supratik, a boy from a family in Calcutta, becomes involved in student unrest, agitation and extremist political activism. His family is completely unaware of this and it is brought to notice through a note that he left behind. The Ghoshes are a large family, and they do not realize that their lives are about to get turbulent. Their family consists of problems like cunning sisters-in-law, destructive secrets and a family business that is not doing well. This is the story of a family that is troubled while the society around it in disintegrating. Things only get worse as time goes. This story revolves around characters that are ambitious, rich and compassionate. It is an anatomy of a social class and all its contradictions.

About Neel Mukherjee

Neel Mukherjee was born in Calcutta. His first Novel, A Life Apart, won the Vodafone Crossword Book Award. The Live of Others is his second book.

Nice fiction

Rich use of language, good sketch of characters, and a nice backdrop combine to form this fiction. No wonder this was nominated for Man Booker Prize. However, the plot lacks pace, and as the title suggests, is a collection of accounts of the lives of different people. Overall, a good read

Reviewing Lives

The book arrived in mint condition and before the stipulated date of arrival. It is a good read and I would recommend it to people who are interested in history or anthropology or linguistics. It's not a light read though, I wrote a two page reflection after I read it, on the use of language. Not an extremely groundbreaking book, I stand by the Booker committee's verdict, deserving of nomination.

Searingly honest

This is a book for the Bengalis. Though non Bengalis will also find the book entertaining, but it will resonate deeper with a Bengali. Good book while falling short of extraordinary

The story is set in 1960's Calcutta and revolves around the various denizens of the Ghosh household.
