Love in the Time of Cholera is a tale of limitless passion and strong love that’s based in the rustic setting of Columbia. The book narrates the story of three people whose lives will be bound together for fifty years. It covers the lives and times of Fermina Daza, Florentino Ariza and Dr. Juvenal Urbino, the three key characters.
Will a lack of passion in her marriage drive a woman towards her old flame?
What defines commitment in a relationship?
These are the questions that Gabriel Garcia Marquez tries to answer through his book, Love in the Time of Cholera. This is a fascinating love story that’s weaved around the lives of its three main protagonists Florentino, Fermina and Juvenal. Fermina is charmed by the romantic ways of Florentino in her youth, but their relationship is cut short by her father.
She eventually gets married, when she is 21, to Juvenal Urbino, a man who offers her love and security. Urbino is a rational man and a doctor who is devoted to eradicating cholera. Their lives are intertwined for a long period of time and Marquez slowly lets the bond between Florentino and Fermina grow from immature romance to a very mature relationship.
Does Fermina go back to Florentino?
Is Juvenal’s practical portrayal of love stained with dark shades?
Love in the Time of Cholera is a stark amalgam of the two contrasting faces of love, purity and practicality. The book was initially published in the year 1985 in Spanish, and was translated to English in 1988.

Written not with ink but love, 'Love in the time of cholera' is a story set in the epidemic of cholera and tells about the disease of love, irremediable and painful.
Picturesque and filled with bubbles of seduction and lovemaking, 'Love in the time of cholera' beautifully explores the various lovely relationships of Mother-Son, Husband-Wife, Man-Mistress, Lover-Goddess, all together knitted with magic called love.
This immense story is like a love song playing in the heart.
An inspiring book for all those who believe in love and suffered in it/still suffering like me, and for those who did not, I avow this book will spin your mind and make you believe that there is magic in this universe i.e. love.
Buy the book and fall in love. This book really brought love in my life.
''There is no greater glory than to die for love''- Florentino Ariza (My favorite quote)
If one wishes to understand how beautiful language can get, one needs to read this book. The story revolves around the lives of three persons - Fermina, Florentino and Dr.Urbino. Without serving spoilers, I will say that the story is about the various ways in which relationships can happen. The beauty of sentence construction is what blew me away. As I was reading the book, I could not help but keep appreciating the writer's skill of describing everyday events and people. The scenery just comes to life as you read and you find yourself among the characters. Great read that makes me go for some other masterworks of the same author.
Like black magic it casts a spell on you while reading, after reading and after many days of ruminating and reliving your own exploits of youth, you are still in 'The love in time of cholera'.Come fall in love with this book and fall in love with life again, while the leaves are mellowing and the temples are greying you will still be green in heart.
For a long time in the shelves of my incurably romantic mind i couldn't find a book worthy of being placed beside Wuthering Heights. Now i think it will get company.
The lives of the three protagonists - Fermino Daza, Florentino Ariza, and Dr. Juvenal Urbino are the core of this book. It shows love in it's various avatars, the various shapes and kinds it can take, what happens in a fight of love between a rational person, and a so-called "Hopeless Romantic", and it's various refraction. Marquez in his book shows the various forms and states of human love and in effect educates and typifies the human mind and true love.
Can't say much about the book as of now. Recieved the book just the day before tomorrow. AS usual, Flipkart's service was absolutely swift and user-friendly. Can say this much though, Its gonna be a tale of limitless passion and joyful love, love which is as pure as a newborn's mind. I would recommend this book to anyone. Specially to those readers who like to read literature, and relish its meaning at the same time.
