Madame Bovary (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.299

Emma is beautiful and bored, trapped in her marriage to a mediocre doctor and stifled by the banality of provincial life. An ardent devourer of sentimental novels, she longs for passion and seeks escape in fantasies of high romance, in voracious spending and, eventually, in adultery. But even her affairs bring her disappointment, and when real life continues to fail to live up to her romantic expectations, the consequences are devastating. Flaubert's erotically charged and psychologically acute portrayal of Emma Bovary caused a moral outcry on its publication in 1857. It was deemed so lifelike that many women claimed they were the model for his heroine; but Flaubert insisted: 'Madame Bovary, c'est moi.'

This modern translation by Flaubert's biographer, Geoffrey Wall, retains all the delicacy and precision of the French original. The edition also contains a preface by the novelist Michele Roberts.

A Student's Edition

Gustave Flaubert is a giant of a writer and his literature deserves attention by a student of literature irrespective of the language he is involved in. I appreciate Rupa's effort in bringing out an English translation priced at just Rs.80, essentially for the student and not the specialist.

Madame Bovary is the best known of Flaubert's work because it has a sensational history. The theme dealt with is that of sin and redemption in 19th Century France, the story of the eponymous heroine Emma who becomes the fallen star and the outcast. Madame Bovary is the best known of Flaubert's work because it has a sensational history. The theme dealt with is that of sin and redemption in 19th Century France, the story of the eponymous heroine Emma who becomes the fallen star and the outcast. Flaubert rests on details- his inimitable style is to contrast the light and darkness both of the physical world and the deep and prohibited inner world of men and women. Flaubert has a word for everything- both the explicable and the inexplicable and he used the beauty and rhythm of French to the fullest in the original version.

I strongly recommend this book for the lay reader and the student to aquaint himself with the wonderful and realistic world that Flaubert conjures up for us. This is especially important for those of us who have been fed exclusively on the literatures from the English speaking world alone.

A real dampener in this particular edition is the poor proof-reading and editing. Typo errors are aplenty. Also for the scholar, the translation is too simple and straightforward and might seem to have missed out on the richness of the original.
