A large part of the story unfolds in Calcutta. Apu Roy (Soumitra Chatterjee) is an unemployed graduate living in a rented room in Calcutta. Despite his teacher's advice to go to University, he is unable to do so because he can't afford it. He tries to find a job, while barely getting by providing private tuition. His main passion is writing a novel, partially based on his own life, hoping to get it published some day and then how his life unfolds with the successive surprises that was stored for him.

A classic movie staring Soumitra Chatterjee, Tanuja, Kamal Mitra, Sumita Sanyal, Tarun Kumar, Rabi Ghosh, Bijan Bhattacharya, Padma Debi, Aparna Debi, Sulata chowdhury, Chinmoy Roy depicting the story of a womans struggle to educate her love who is a street urchin, and establish her as the best with her love, faith, patience, and perseverence. The music is wonderful with Manna Dey and Aratis songs. Soumitra danced great with the Jibone Ki Pabo Naa song.
