Mahabharata (Set of 3 Volumes) (English) (Hardcover) Price: Rs.1440

Mahabharata (Set Of 3 Volumes), published by Amar Chitra Katha, is a comic book version of the famous Indian epic of the Mahabharata. It consists of three volumes, spanning a total of 1200-odd pages.

The Mahabharata is considered to be the longest epic poem in the world. The creation of this ageless epic is traditionally attributed to the seer Vyasa. His disciple Vaishampayana narrated it in public for the first time. King Janamejaya and numerous learned sages were present at the recital. They had gathered for a 12-year-long sacred ritual called Yajna.

The first volume is titled The Kuru Princes of Hastinapura. Beginning with Shantanu, King Janamejaya’s ancestor and the ruler of Hastinapura, this volume narrates the various events that led to the establishment of the Kuru dynasty. It leads the story to the reign of Dhritarashtra over Hastinapura while his brother Pandu has retired to the forest with his two wives Kunti and Madri and five sons (The Pandavas).

Upon the death of Pandu and Madri, Kunti and the Pandavas return to Hastinapura. The return of the Pandavas, and being armed with numerous skills, make the Kauravas (the 100 sons of Dhritarashtra) jealous of them. The eldest Kaurava brother, Duryodhana, plots to send the Pandavas into exile. Forewarned about his intentions, the Pandavas manage to foil his plan and escape from the trap set for them.

Then they spend a year in disguise, and during this time, Arjuna wins the hand of Draupadi in marriage. Without knowing what Arjuna has won in  the archery match, Kunti unwittingly asks the Pandavas to share the prize. Thus, Draupadi ends up being married to all of the Pandava brothers. After their wedding, the Pandavas are invited back to Hastinapura to resume peaceful relations.

The second volume, The Pandavas In Exile, covers events like the Rajasooya Yajna performed by the eldest Pandava Yudhisthira, and Bheema’s slaying of the notorious Jarasandha. Eventually, the Pandavas and Kauravas play a game of dice in which the Pandavas are defeated. They are forced into 13 years of exile, of which, they must spend the last year in disguise. When they return from the stipulated exile period to reclaim their share of the kingdom, their claim is denied by Duryodhana, laying the foundation for the subsequent Kurukshetra war.

The third volume, titled On The Battlefield Of Kurukshetra, begins with the efforts of Krishna to establish a peaceful settlement between the hostile brothers. However, his attempts prove futile, and thus begins the 18-day-long Kurukshetra war.

Mahabharata (Set Of 3 Volumes) was published in 2010 by Amar Chitra Katha Pvt. Ltd.

Traditionally, the authorship of the Mahabharata is attributed to Vyasa.
The Mahabharata is the longest Sanskrit epic.[5] Its longest version consists of over 100,000 shloka or over 200,000 individual verse lines (each shloka is a couplet), and long prose passages. About 1.8 million words in total, the Mahabharata is roughly ten times the length of the Iliad and the Odyssey combined, or about four times the length of the Ramayana.

Beautiful !

A great collection with good hard-binding (with a fairly sturdy cardboard case to house all three volumes), clear print, and reasonably good paper quality (nearly 80 GSM, i guess).

Having already collected the original single volumes (42 in total) over a few years back in the 80s and 90s, i felt it would be nice to have a hard-bound version too. In comparison, although the content is the same, the nostalgia of seeing slightly yellow/brown/sepia coloured paper is lost in the newer version (though the quality of paper is surely better).

In comparison, although the content is the same, the nostalgia of seeing slightly yellow/brown/sepia coloured paper is lost in the newer version (though the quality of paper is surely better).

Further, each separate volume of the older version had an individual cover page with an illustration. For those of you particular about that aspect, it might lead to a bit of a disappointment because the new version has just 3 separate cover pages for the 3 volumes respectively; within volume 1, each new section starts off with a standard picture of Arjuna and Lord Krishna just before the war begins (the 'Gita scene'), with a brief account of the previous section.

Great product, and happy to see Amar Chitra Katha keeping the flag flying high!

As usual, great delivery (2 days) by Flipkart.

Great potential, but wasted by the script

I'm basing my comparison on Uncle Pai's Amar Chitra Katha on Ramayana. Loved that one.

The Mahabharata being the ultimate Indian epic could have been a phenomenal rendition as a comic book. Unfortunately this series does not live up to one's expectations. The script is mundane. The first volume is nice - I could even say it's good. The second volume is rubbish.
You have force yourself to read through it - the way some kids need to be coaxed through the greens on their plate.
If you survive that, the 3rd volume is passable.

Overall you do learn some interesting nuggets about the epic. An...

You have force yourself to read through it - the way some kids need to be coaxed through the greens on their plate.
If you survive that, the 3rd volume is passable.

Overall you do learn some interesting nuggets about the epic. And one appreciates it is a humongous task to digest the Mahabharat in a 3-volume comic book collection.

But at the end I got the feeling that the production team took some shortcuts to meet delivery constraints -- and they're most visible in the script.

It could have been a great legacy. But leaves you with a sad feeling in the end.
Would love to recommend, but can't wholeheartedly recommend.
Good for ABCDs though.

Very good book for all ages

THis book is very much relevant and readable by all ages.

Anant Pai - the editor of this book is very well known for his Amar Chitra katha books and this 3 volume set is exactly what one would expect.

Everyone knows about the main stories in the mahabharata, but the book delves into many short stories that explain why the main story happened. for e.g Why was Draupadi fated to marry the five pandavas? Why did arjuna undertake an exile of 12 years during which he acquired all his weapons etc.

The illustrations are very nice and detailed.. .for e.g Sage Vyasa is always depicted dark in color, because he was indeed of the "krishna"(dark) color. Draupadi is never shown to have tied her hair after the dice event and till the battle ends. Its the attention to the smaller details that makes you love this book as well.

The entire 3 volumes is split into about 90 short stories which makes it easier to tell kids on a daily basis.

Very good buy.

Also, extremely good of Flipkart to offer 40% discount on this book... really good service.
