Description

This is the seventh volume of Bibek Debroy’s faithful translation of the Sanskrit epic: The Mahabharata.

Summary of the Book

The Mahabharata is a classic tale of conflict, love, compassion, greed and the human capacity for truth and righteousness. It is attributed to the legendary sage Veda Vyasa and has come down through the millennia by oral tradition. Several English translations of the Mahabharata exist, but this translation brings readers the unabridged story from the Critical Edition compiled at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute. In this seventh volume, the story of the battle at Kurukshetra continues. The Pandavas and Kauravas carry on their epic battle, and the stage is set for a climactic explosion of power. Karna is named the commander of the Kaurava forces. He is a mighty warrior and has the power to annihilate thousands with his knowledge. However, his doom has already been written in the past, for his master cursed him to forget how to use his knowledge at the very moment he needs it the most. Karna’s command does not even last two days of the eighteen day battle. When Karna falls, Shalya is named the commander. The title becomes ominous as even he falls after one day. Events draw to a close as Duryodhana faces the mighty Bhima in a battle of maces. Who will emerge victorious, for both are equally strong? The Mahabharata is a tale of every human emotion and experience, and that is exactly why it remains an immortal story. This is the only translation everyone aching to learn more about that timeless epic needs to read.
