This is a gem of a product. A friend (very thoughtfully) gifted us the VCD version and we are greedily working our way through the fine buffet of 18 disks. I am sure the DVD version will be even better and they are selling it dirt cheap (same price as couple of YRF flops)!
The audio and video quality is good, which is impressive considering this is 20 year old and before private broadcasters came in. The stories, of course, are impeccable. The cast and acting is superb and the director creates an immersive period setting without mega-budget 3D effects :-)
Watching Anant Nag easily switch between a 25 year old son and a 60 year old father in the brilliant "Mithaiwala" story reminds us of the days when drama and melodrama was conveyed with eyes on TV and not 3-times repeated close-up shots accompanied by rising crescendo. The best review is that even our 3 year old kid LOVES watching this, which frankly took me by surprise, and hums the "ta-na-na" tune all the time.
I still remember as a child waiting for Malgudi days to come on Doordarshan, and now my children love this DVD. Considering that the show appeared nearly 20 years ago, it still holds charm for the modern day kids, and closed captioning does help for those who do not speak/understand Hindi fluently. An excellent purchase and a good DVD set to have, if you have young children in the house. Don't hesitate. If you don't own it, buy it right Now.
I still remember my childhood DD days when Malgudi days was broadcasted weekly. I finished reading biography of its director Shankar Nag, and made a point to look out for his brainchild Malgudi Days. I found flipkart offering this collection for cheap and ordered (thats when my relationship with flipkart started too).
After watching all episodes (some 50 ), only thing that comes to my mid is "what a wonderful life I had back as a kid. No complexities, everything was simple". This DVD will go as a collection gift to my son. That may look like one of history lessons for him in future, but he will get to know what kind of life his father lead as a kid (there is lot of resembelence between the tirtahalli (malgudi) and my village, and both are quite close-by geographically)
For someone like me who grew up watching Malgudi, this is nirvana! The stories remain etched in one's memory long after one has read/watched them. I even have the title song as my mobile phone ringtone.
This is a timeless series which will survive even when all of these other junk aspiring Indian writers in English have long faded away.
Here is the soul of South India, indeed, the whole of India, captured for eternity. Buy the books, and buy these DVDs. Would be the best thing you ever bought. Priceless.
Nostalgic and exceptionally brilliant... No u don't need to just watch it,... U need to own it. Great price for an excellent item. Totally worth every penny. I was just so excited even browsing thru the menu with background theme song. An absolute must buy for all, especially those looking for top-class short moral stories.
