Man-eaters of Kumaon (English) 4th Edition (Paperback) Price: Rs.208

The Man-Eaters Of Kumaon is a series of ten stories written by Jim Corbett about his experience of hunting and killing tigers and leopards that preyed on men.

Summary Of The Book

Dealing with the real life experiences of the author Jim Corbett, The Man-Eaters Of Kumaon contain stories about these ferocious animals that used to prey on people in Indian villages. One of the best books by the author, it talks about his experience of hunting tigers and leopards that killed men in the Kumaon region of India. Sympathetic to the plight of these animals, the book depicts the author’s desire to save people from being killed by them.

The various chapters in the book are clearly demarcated and deal with incidents that occurred in the life of the famous hunter. Some of the chapters included in the book include Champawat Man-eater, the Chowgarh tigers, the Pipal Pani Tigers, the Mohan Man-eater, Fish of My Dreams, the Kanda Man-eater, and Just Tigers. Written with a deep understanding of forests and their sounds, this book also showcases the deep love that the author possessed for mankind that would get caught in the terrain of animals.

Written by the author when he was confined to a wheelchair due to tick typhus and malaria, the book was published in 1944 in India. A bestseller since the time it was published, the book brought hope and joy into the lives of many people who were inspired by this hunter who risked his life to save others. The book has also been translated into 14 different Indian languages. The book has been adapted into movies and documentaries as well. By 1980, over four million editions of the book had been sold.

About Jim Corbett

A well-known hunter, environment conservationist, author and avid photographer, Jim Corbett is known throughout the world for killing man eating leopards and tigers.

Jim Corbett has also authored Jungle Stories, My India, Jungle Lore, The Man-Eating Leopard Of Rudraprayag and Tree Tops among other books.

A colonel in the British Indian army, Corbett grew up in a large family. His parents shifted to Nainital even before his birth and from his early days, Corbett was attracted to forests and wildlife. He soon became a skilled hunter and worked with the Bihar North Western Railways for 22 years. After 1947, he retired to Kenya and died of a heart attack in 1955 at the age of 79. After his death, the national reserve in Uttarakhand that he helped to set up to preserve the Bengal Tiger was renamed Jim Corbett National Park to honor his memory.

Great book but horrible printing

Corbett's books are arguably the best non-fiction shikar experience you are likely to have, and this one is no exception. Written, as always, with that acute sense of the jungle and its denizens, its not just pulse pounding for being the lore of the man-killers whom he hunts on foot and within their domain, but is also an immaculately crafted and beautifully woven tale of the "tooth and claw" reign that the simple Indian village folk had to reside in. It will fill you with pity at the same time as it will raise the hair on the back of your hand.

However, the printing from Oxford India is below par to say the least. There is an error on every page that takes some fun out of the reading. Its strange how their standards of production have gone down over the years.

A true thriller

This is the book that one should read, store and tell tales from! Wonderfully narrated by Jim, it felt like I was watching a thriller movie. Jim's view of nature and tigers are a lesson too. I wonder whether anybody tried making a movie based on Jim's stories! It would be grand success for sure.

great book

This book takes into account the man eaters and how Jim shot them one after another. The description is amazing as usual and takes one in the same phase as he is. If one really reads it thoroughly, one can actually feel the excitement in nerves.

Coupled together with the amazing description of the hunts and humor that he puts in the stories, this is all in all a very good book.

Cheers to Jim!!!!!!!

Great Book by the Great person

I read in 1994, though I heard about this classic recommended by Mr. Arjun Singh one of the prominent wildlife experts during late 1980s, and had thought what would be interesting in a book written about man eaters. But when I came across the book after that, I wondered reading the book. I c... (View complete review)

Man Eaters of Kumaon

This is the best book on man-eater hunting I have ever read. Besides man-eater hunting, Jim Corbett describes in detail, the life style and culture of the people living in the Kumaon Region. The author's passion for the wild and his knowledge of the wild and wild animals is amazing. Written... (View complete review)
