Manik Da : Memories of Satyajit Ray (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.128

Satyajit Ray, known to his intimates as Manik-da, remains India?s most respected name in international film circles. This book reveals in its simplicity the ease and camaraderie between Satyajit Ray, one of India?s finest film- makers, and Nemai Ghosh, photographer extraordinaire. Manik-da is the latter?s endeavour to depict the man behind the director?s mask.

Ghosh first worked with Ray on Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, and Ray immediately found in him a kindred spirit who intuitively understood his requirements ? and whom he understood. Thus was formed a partnership that spanned over a quarter of a century. In the process, Ghosh was able to photograph Ray at work and play, capturing on film the many moods of the master director.

This nuanced and lucid translation from the Bengali original, which includes a perceptive Foreword by Sharmila Tagore, presents to the English reader Ghosh?s thoughts on Ray with over fifty exquisite, never-before-seen photographs.

About the Author
Nemai Ghosh is best known for his photographs of Satyajit Ray and his stills from Ray?s films. He has exhibited at Cannes in 1971, at London in 1992, and several times at Calcutta and Delhi. Ghosh began his artistic career as an actor. He is the author of Faces of Indian Art: Through the Lens of Nemai Ghosh, Satyajit Ray: A Vision of Cinema (with Andrew Robinson), Satyajit Ray at 70, among others.

S.K. Ray Chaudhuri worked as a geologist with Cement Corporation of India till 1992. He then took to freelancing as an editor with leading publishing houses in India. His translation of a biography of S.D. Burman is forthcoming.

A book of its expected capacity

The book delivers some new photographs and details of Ray, albeit not thoroughly. More information and a good English would make this book truly enjoyable. The expected delight is, however, fulfilled at this price.

Review of the Book - ???Manik Da: Memories of Satyajit Ray??? by Nemai Ghosh (Herper Collins Publishers India)

The book reveals the story of a common boy from a middle class family turning to a professional photographer. Nemai Ghosh, the writer of this book was associated with one of the finest film makers of this continent, Satyajit Ray for about twenty five long years almost like a shadow of him. He captured Ray in different moods and temperaments ??? working-contemplating-depressed-guffawing-enjoying the marriage anniversary with his wife and such quite a lot of frames of mind. Nemai Ghosh whose first love was theatre but here in this book he recounted the chronicles of how he gradually turned to a professional photographer from a stage actor in theatre, how Ray gradually plucked his talent in photography to make him choosing photography as a profession. He written ??????this is how I learnt the art of perfect photography from him.??? He explained some of the striking and inspiring natures of Satyajit Ray, those he felt while working with Ray; he written ??????but he used to get annoyed if someone wanted him to demonstrate how to do something. His mantra was ???do it yourself???, though he would act as a guide every step of the way. He would judge a man through his attempts and then guide him in a manner that he could easily follow.??? In this book he shared some of his very warm and touchy experiences annexed with the master film maker and how he learnt to be a perfectionist in work after taking sheltered under the ???huge tree???, in his word by which he explained Satyajit Ray???s influence in his life and his motivation for working. He said somewhere in this book ???I can only say that my inspiration, my experiences were but small pebbles that I picked up from the shore of a mighty ocean called Satyajit Ray.??? Starting from the time of shooting of ???Gupi Gyne Bagha Byne??? (when he met Satyajit Ray for the first time) to ???Agantuk??? (the last film of Ray) he shared some remarkable memories of those times, he spent with Ray. Not only that but also the book is full of some of the rare photographs of Satyajit Ray in different moods once clicked by him. The famous actress Sharmila Tagore who had casted roles in several of Ray???s films has exquisitely written a foreword for this book. In short, this book is a must read retrospective, full of emotions and reminiscences.

Couldn't Put it Down

I received the packet from flipkart, opened it and started reading the book. Half an hour passed by and I couldn't realize I had finished reading the book. I was left hungry for more. A very well narrated one! Though not the best books on Satyajit Ray, yet a book you'd love to own and read to know a light-hearted aspect of his towering personality!
