The Maruti Story - How A Public Sector Company Put India On Wheels (English) (Hardcover) Price: Rs.299

The Maruti Story – How a Public Sector Company Put India on Wheels, by the former CEO and current chairman of Maruti Suzuki, R. C. Bhargava, and Seetha, is an extraordinary story of a few determined entrepreneurs who created an icon.

Summary of the Book

The Maruti project was initially doubted as an unachievable idea. The precincts of Indian expertise on finding a business partner, finalizing legal documentation, getting government approval, investment proposals, building a factory, developing a supplier base to meet localization regulations, creating sales and service network were the main reason behind the misapprehensions. The fact that a public sector company had taken up the project, and had to please Indian government and the Suzuki Motor Corporation, was considered an almost impossible target. But the Maruti project did succeed, and in ways that were not even imaginable. Even the middle-class men and women started dreaming of owning an economical and modern car. The sales were met easily, and the cars made by Maruti started to be seen in all continents eventually. The Maruti Story – How a Public Sector Company Put India on Wheels depicts this remarkable story of sheer grit, entrepreneurship and management skills behind a landmark achievement.

A different perspective

The Maruti Story offers a view different from the one commonly found. On the internet and in other media, the focus is on the associated scandals, the market share, product reviews and so on, but the book reveals the history of the company itself.

There is much emphasis on the fact that it was a PSU and the struggles that the management faced because of that. Throughout the book there are references to the red-tape that the founders encountered and the need to exhibit propriety

There is much emphasis on the fact that it was a PSU and the struggles that the management faced because of that. Throughout the book there are references to the red-tape that the founders encountered and the need to exhibit propriety

The book is coherent and meaningful and covers many topics in depth, including labor issues, funding, corporate law and negotiating with a foreign technical collaborator.

I only wish that the book had been written by a technical guy or at least had more inputs about the technological aspects of setting up a large car manufacturing unit from scratch.

As it is, having been written by an IAS officer and a current affairs journalist, the book spends more time talking about the political wranglings during the 'license raj' era than about the actual building of the car.

Also more pictures of the car and the manufacturing process would have been nice, rather than stock photos of Indira Gandhi and various management personnel of Maruti and Suzuki

Excellent book for fans and potential entrepreneurs

This book is an excellent read for all those who want to know about Maruti's history. It also gives the reader a fair idea about the License Raj period.

The book is well written and at any point the reader does not feel bored.
