Mechanics of Materials 6e (English, Paperback, Beer)
Beer and Johnston's Mechanics of Materials is a comprehensive book for undergraduate mechanical or civil engineers studying a preliminary course on the strength of materials. The book discusses the fundamentals of stress and strain, showing how materials deform under load. It also discusses the use of free body diagrams and how they can be used to solve otherwise complex problems of structures. Further, the book discusses the various forms of loads which can be exerted on a body, and how they react depending on their cross-section. In doing so, it discusses beams, columns, thin-walled members and also gives an understanding of torsion. The book is an essential resource for anyone wishing to build the fundamentals required to progress towards a more advanced course on elasticity or plasticity.
About the Authors
Ferdinand P. Beer was a French Mechanical Engineer and academician, who worked at the Lehigh University as chairman of the mechanics and mechanical engineering departments. He is best remembered for his contributions towards the literature of mechanics which are considered the foundation of structural academics today.
E. Russell Johnston Jr. was an American mechanical engineer and an academician who worked at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Connecticut. He was also the Department Head for a brief period.
The writers have also collaborated on Mechanics for Engineers and Vector Mechanics for Engineers.
John DeWolf is a former Civil & Environmental Engineering professor at the University of Connecticut where he has worked for nearly 35 years. An academician with vast experience in the fields of structural mechanics, he has also served as the associate editor of the Structural Health Monitoring magazine.
David F. Mazurek is the Professor of Civil Engineering at the Department of Engineering, U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He has previously served on General Dynamics’ Electric Boat Division, supporting the submarine construction and engineering design and analysis of pressure hulls and other structures.
