Middlesex (Paperback) Price: Rs.340

'I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day of January 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of l974. My birth certificate lists my name as Calliope Helen Stephanides. My most recent driver's license records my first name simply as Cal.' So begins the breathtaking story of Calliope Stephanides, and three generations of the Greek-American Stephanides family who travel from a tiny village overlooking Mount Olympus in Asia Minor to Prohibition era Detroit, witnessing its glory days as the Motor City, and the race riots of l967, before they move out to the tree-lined streets of suburban Grosse Point, Michigan. To understand why Calliope is not like other girls, she has to uncover a guilty family secret, and the astonishing genetic history that turns Callie into Cal, one of the most audacious and wondrous narrators in contemporary fiction. Lyrical and thrilling, "Middlesex" is an exhilarating reinvention of the American epic.

My rainbow of consciousness in a jar

The best book, so far I have read this year, the bildungsroman/coming of age, Middlesex is a beautiful saga that brings to the fore, the angst of a teenage girl as she discovers a biological (life changing) secret that lurks within her. This bitter truth leads to her emancipation and final metamorphosis. The novel tells the tale of the Stephanides family through three generations, spanning from a time in Greece to their final exodus, Grosse Pointe, in the United States of America.
The language and style is exquisite. The move of time-frame from the present to the past is well executed, like a chiaroscuro of moving thoughts and realistic imagery. The character delineations are perfect and deeply moving.Eugenides highlights the "nature vs nurture" motif in good doses and brings up the subject of gender issue, treating it with natural understanding and warm handling. Middlesex has its equal dosage of humour that excites and scatters itself through the pages.Clearly, the author has done his homework on all the facts and figures of scientific research when he was writing this...
To sum it up... Middlesex is my "rainbow of consciousness in a jar " as it left me deeply ponderous. Two thumbs up !!

Amazing writing

when i first picked up this book, i was a little apprehensive, given the strong subject matter, however the book itself never gets too heavy or overwhelming, but glides smoothly through out the story. Also it never gets preachy or too sympathetic, but the reader feels how the characters are being normal in their very own way. Strongly recommended.
