Whitney also faces the mixed emotions of embracing her long-term drug-addicted mother. Eddie is a married man on the down low, struggling with his sexuality and the consequences of coming out of the closet. His decision to reveal his innermost secret results in the loss of his wife to a suicidal death, and greatly strains the relationship he has with his father. And Roxy, a single and promiscuous Latino survivor of sexual abuse who looks for love in all the wrong places, finds herself trapped between two relationships in which the males are father and son. The novel ends with the shocking and poignant event of the September 11th Twin Towers tragedy, which one of the characters eyewitnesses.
