A Million Little Pieces (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.332

A Million Little Pieces by James Frey, is a semi fictional memoir about the author’s struggle through drug and alcohol addiction, and how he combats his inner rage to overcome the odds.

Summary Of The Book

Frey’s narrative begins with him awakening in an airplane without having any awareness of how he got on a plane or why he was injured. After his parents learn about his drug and alcohol abuse and also about his criminal convictions, they admit him into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center.

The events that subsequently follow at the Rehab center, will help readers understand the reason behind Frey’s book title A Million Little Pieces. While undergoing treatment, the audience is made aware of James’ mental and physical agony as he endures complete abstinence from both drugs and alcohol. For instance, James talks about undergoing a root canal without any anaesthetic procedure due to the possibility of reacting negatively to Novocaine. He also mentions having to attend family therapy sessions despite his unwillingness to do so.

Through his internal monologue, readers get a clear sense of the battle that rages within James as he combats this “Fury” within himself, which he regards as the principal cause for his need to consume drugs and alcohol.

As his treatment progresses, James befriends a mafia boss and a female drug addict. Two interesting characters to whom he attributes his recovery.

To date, A Million Little Pieces has received a mixed reception. Pat Conroy glorified the book as a “War and Peace on addiction”. While others critics such as Julian Keeling and Heather King were not thrilled by the content of the book. In 2005, after being selected for Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club, A Million Little Pieces topped the The New York Times Best Seller List for fifteen weeks. In 2006, the book grabbed international attention when it was discovered that many parts of the book were falsified.

Good Read. Inspirational

This is better known for the controversy surrounding it rather than the quality of work Frey has put in. Anyways, my recommendation is to ignore all the controversies and read this book as a fiction.

Frey is 20 something guy dealing with drug addiction who tries his way out of addiction in a treatment center. Best thing about this book is that somehow you can relate yourself to Frey despite him being a totally different personality.

The book is not about how to stop taking drugs, it is about how to face and more importantly accept your problems when you are almost down and emerge as a win...

A Million Little Pieces

Interesting read, especially because it throws light on something that isn't as openly discussed - addictions and rehab. However, the fact that the book is riddled in controversy about its authenticity kind of ruined it.
I would recommend this to be a one time read. Borrow it from a friend :)

Dark Masterpiece

This is a must read for all the lovers of Dark Fiction/Non-Fiction. It is worth every penny you spent on it. Plus to add, it is a must be read for all those who think a change requires some planned work. On top of Frey glorifies Tao Te Ching, the Chinese Masterpiece of Lao Tze in this work.
