  • Description
On his way from Tangiers to China, the medieval Moorish traveller Ibn Battuta arrives in Konya, Turkey where the legendary dervish Rumi had lived, danced and died. More than half a century may have passed since his death, but his poetry remains alive, inscribed in every stone and tree and pathway. Rumi’s followers entrust Ibn Battuta with a manuscript of his life stories to spread word of the mystic on his travels. As Battuta reads and recites these tales, his listeners discover their own lives reflected in these stories—fate has bound them, and perhaps you, to Rumi. A Mirrored Life reaffirms the magical powers of storytelling, making us find Rumi in each of our hearts.

    Liberating.

You start reading a book with just two eyes and by the time you put the book down you have thousand eyes. A mirrored is like a detailed Persian carpet, instead of the golden threads and details it is an intricate mixture of stories, stories that have outlived time. The book is brimming with stories about life and times of Rumi and it is told in such a fashion that it seems that your grand mother is telling you these tales of love and magic and you wish that this night never ends.

    In this bo...

    stories worth reading

I have read Dozakhnama and loved it and thus wanted to read this book the moment I got news about this book’s release. This book is a translation of bengali book just like Dozakhnama. It’s mere 200 pages, so one can finish it in few hours.

Ibn Battuta tells us how he got his hands on this beautiful kitab and then starts reading Rumi’s kitab to us.

Just like Dozaknama, A Mirrored Life is entertaining with loads of stories. With these stories, Rumi’s life is revealed to us, chapter by chapter

    A Rippling Reflection

So much of Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta is shrouded in mystery, that where the man ends and where the legend begins is hard to fathom. Rabisankar Bal makes a credible effort to follow the man, just not on his physical journey that he undertakes, but also on the spiritual journey that he is entrusted with: to spread the word of Sufi mystic Rumi.

In these stories within a story, Bal shows us how Battuta changes his outlook in life with each interesting place and character he experiences, and ...

Get an essence of what RUMI was/is about

I have been reading Rumi alot for the past few months and wanted to know more about him and his life, this book did not entirely quench the thirst, but at least i had something to drink :)
The book is technically the translated words of Ibn Batuta, his travels in Turkey and what he got to know about Rumi when he visited Konya expressed in the form of beautiful stories and quisas, The book was my gate to the story of Shams and Rumi. Now i can better understand Rumi's poetry.
    The book was an ...

    Beautiful read...

A beautiful book, written by an author who is repeatedly spinning out mystic tales, translated by Arunava sinha in a manner par excellence. It doesn't feel like a translation at any point.

Ibn Battuta's journey in finding more about the life of Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi, the reader is transported in the times when this was happening. A wonderful read, something you will live in long past you have finished reading the book!

    A collection of exceptional qissa's

The first I heard of Ibn Battuta was from a popular Bollywood song - who says our movies aren't educational. When I looked him up, I was amazed at the extent of his travels at a time when travelling even short distances must have been a nightmare. Try and imagine a man so driven by the need to explore that no ties, either family or money or women, were able to bind him down; although it is said that he was nudged along this destiny by the words of an Imam in Alexandria who prophesied his jou...

    A recommended read

The Mirrored Life reminds me of traditions of Kathasaritsagar, the story within story or of Scheherazade of the Arabian nights. It is story about life of Rumi recounted through the fictional journey of Ibn Battuta, the 14th century Moorish traveler. Ibn Battuta traveller on his way to China from Tangier makes a fictional stop in Anatolia. There he receives a secret manuscript from a calligrapher Yakut al-Mustasimi. Not only does Yakut play Scheherazade, which left me wanting for more, his man...

    Sufism- poorly understood!

Sufism is a complex topic and easily misunderstood. Western world is seriously confused between sex and love.It is disheartening to find the same concept growing in India. Maulana Rumi was one of the greatest saint ever born. He loved his teacher to the extend that he reached "Fana" in him. He is an extremely respected character in history.I am afraid, the author of this book doesn't understand how to write about "elders". The book distorts the biography of Maulana into a fiction. It not only...
