Unforgettable!

Picked up this book on the recommendation of a friend and what a read it has been! Deceptively simple and full of lyrical passages that bring to life the beauty of a coastal village in Bougainville, the book is essentially Matilda's coming-of-age story. It is as much about the transformative power of literature.

Mr Watts, Matilda's 'white' teacher, who has chosen to stay back in this conflict-ridden island long after the others have left, takes it upon himself to teach Dickens to awe-struck village kids who, despite their pitiful circumstances, where death lurks behind every bush, find a...

Picked up this book on the recommendation of a friend and what a read it has been! Deceptively simple and full of lyrical passages that bring to life the beauty of a coastal village in Bougainville, the book is essentially Matilda's coming-of-age story. It is as much about the transformative power of literature.

Mr Watts, Matilda's 'white' teacher, who has chosen to stay back in this conflict-ridden island long after the others have left, takes it upon himself to teach Dickens to awe-struck village kids who, despite their pitiful circumstances, where death lurks behind every bush, find a kindred soul in Pip, a character from "Great Expectations". Though initially distrustful of his motives, the children come to admire and love Watts for the gift he gives them, a glimpse of and an escape into Dickensian London, a world far-removed from their own reality. He not just helps them get through the book, omitting passages and changing facts whenever he deems fit, but also invites the villager elders to his classroom to share their own folkloric knowledge, thereby doing his bit to enrich their lives the best way he can. When the book is lost to them, he asks each of them to recount whatever little they remember of the story, and thereby helps them join the threads, sometimes inaccurately, to retell the story. Though tragedy strikes the village and threatens to take away everything from Matilda, the book ends on a powerful note of hope rather than despair and makes you want to go back to the first page and start reading again. A post-colonial masterpiece and a must read!

Warm and uplifting.

It was a great experience to read this book. The characters were flesh and blood, the story was warm but not crassly emotional. Matilda is precocious, while Mister Pip is that endearingly soft gentleman. A tale that brings those curious elements together. Brilliant use of the popular reference of the Charles Dickens classic, Great Expectations, as well. Exceptionally gifted author, a great read!
